CLEVELAND, Ga- White County is better prepared for disasters with the recent approval of their local hazard mitigation plan, which is a long-term strategy to reduce the community’s vulnerability to natural disasters. White County along with the City of Cleveland and City of Helen recently adopted the plan update.
The plan identifies hazards and potential hazards in White County, and it creates a framework to help community officials make decisions that may ultimately protect lives and property.
The plan also outlines a strategy for implementing mitigation projects in our communities. Through projects such as outdoor warning sirens, and wildfire management, White County is taking proactive steps to lessen the impact of future disasters and the costly expenses associated with them.
History shows that the physical, financial, and emotional losses caused by disasters can be reduced significantly through hazard mitigation planning. The planning process encourages communities to integrate mitigation with day-to-day decision-making regarding land-use planning, floodplain management, site design and other activities.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reviews and approves state, tribal and local hazard mitigation plans, which are required as a condition for states and communities to receive certain types of disaster assistance, including funding for mitigation projects. State mitigation plans must be approved every five years, and local and tribal mitigation plans must be approved at least once every five years.

Helen flooded due to Tropical Storm Fred

Helen, Ga.- Tropical Storm Fred made landfall Monday and it brought rain. 3.40 inches of rain have fallen in the area fell in White by Tuesday evening. The extra rainfall resulted in flooding in Helen and much of the surrounding area.

A flash flood warning was in effect until 6:15 p.m. as the storm continues to make its way through the state. Many roads are closed such as Edelweiss Strasses, the bridge off Edelweiss behind the Festhalle, Brucken Strasse in Helen, and Quillian Street in Cleveland. There were many other roads closed in the White county area currently.
According to the National Weather Service, the flood stage for the Chattahoochee is 6ft and at 4:00 p.m the river was registering at 6.46ft. On Tuesday evening, the river was experiencing still in minor stages of flooding with the rainfall continuing.
Areas affected by the flooding are the Cool River Tubing company, the Welcome Center, the Hardmen Trail, and the restaurants directly by the river. The shops along Edelweiss were also affected by the floods, one of those included is Dollar General.

The expected rainfall from the storm was 2-4 inches.

White County Sheriff’s office is advised people to stay off the roads and if you have to travel they are advising using extreme caution as there is a lot of water and debris on the roads. They’re working with the local power companies to get everything cleaned up and back up and working. Also, they are asking you to not drive in any water that you can’t tell the depth.
