Flash Flood Watch in effect for White County

The National Weather Service at Peachtree City has issued a flash flood watch until 1 p.m. today (Thurs., Feb.13)for the following counties: Dawson-Lumpkin-White-Dade-Walker-Catoosa-Whitfield-Murray-Fannin-Gilmer-Union-Towns-Chattooga-Gordon-Pickens-Dawson-Lumpkin-White-Floyd-Bartow-Cherokee-Polk-including the cities of Calhoun, Dahlonega, Cleveland, Rome, and Cartersville. The Flash Flood Watch continues for portions of north central Georgia…northeast Georgia and northwest Georgia…including the following areas…in north central Georgia…Cherokee…Dawson…Fannin…Gilmer… Lumpkin…Pickens and Union. In northeast Georgia…Towns and White. In northwest Georgia…Bartow…Catoosa…Chattooga… Dade…Floyd…Gordon…Murray..Polk…Walker and Whitfield.
* A cold front will move southeast across the forecast area today. This front will bring another round of locally heavy rainfall to much of north Georgia. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches will be possible, with locally higher amounts possible. Soils remain saturated and several rivers, creeks and streams remain near or in flood, so any additional rainfall will only create run off and exacerbate ongoing flooding conditions.
* Flash flooding and minor to moderate flooding of larger creek and rivers is expected. This will close some roads and could flood homes and businesses in flood-prone areas. Along larger creeks and rivers, flooding could last for several days.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Cam Greene is a candidate for Probate Judge

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. — Cam Greene has announced his candidacy for Probate Judge. A graduate of Truett McConnell University with a bachelor’s degree in history and a White County resident for 35 years, he is a member of First Baptist Church of Cleveland and an active member of the Kiwanis Club.
Cam has been employed with Barrett Funeral Home since 2010 and has owned and managed his own landscaping business, Greene Grass since 2012.
He is seeking the position so that he can serve his fellow citizens. His family has a history of service and leadership beginning with his grandfather, Tom Hood, who served as State Representative and State Senator. This service has extended to his father, Bradley Greene, who has served on the Cleveland City Council for 15 years. Now, at the age of 35, he feels led to continue this legacy of service to the citizens of White County.
He believes the following five qualities that he possesses are essential for success in this position: Honesty, compassion, integrity, fairness and sound judgment. He also believes that his education and experiences in both owning his own business and working in the funeral service business are solid foundations that further qualify him to serve in this capacity.
Working in the funeral service industry he has been able to connect with and help people of all ages and backgrounds during the most difficult and emotional times of their lives. As Probate Judge, Cam will have the foundation necessary to respect and connect with individuals on a personal level while helping them understand the probate process which will make it easier for all involved.
Over the years, has communicated with and helped many people in his own community, and he plans to continue those efforts in the position of White County Probate Judge. It would be an honor for Cam, a native son of White County, to serve the people and community that he care’s so deeply about… and he humbly ask for your vote.

Crews continue to clear roads in White County
Community, News February 8, 2020
Cleveland, Ga. – White County Public Safety (WCPS) issued a statement today around 11:15 a.m. stating that roadways in the county were dangerous and mostly impassable.
WCPS further advised for the public to stay home as crews work to treat the roadways and released in that statement “The road conditions are dangerous, we have multiple cars in ditches and blocking roadways”.
Much of North Georgia has been impacted by a winter weather event that has passed through our area, and White County has faced many of the roadway problems seen in surrounding regions.
Robert Graham, Director of the Fannin County Emergency Management Agency, explained what took place in North Georgia leading to these threatening conditions: “The pavement was wet when the snow started falling, so the wet areas on our roadways have turned to ice.”
The soft blanket of snow left many motorists feeling confident that their four-wheel-drives could handle the conditions, but the layer of ice underneath the snow is what has left many stranded on the side of roadways.
While there is a small window where citizens will see the snow begin to melt off, it is expected to refreeze tonight causing areas of black ice. It is advised to not travel tonight unless absolutely necessary.
White County Public Safety continues to urge the public to “stay home and off the roads today”.

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. — White County Public Safety reports that as of 11:45 a.m., Feb. 6, several White County roads are closed due to flooding:

Bottoms Road
Sandy Flats Road at the bridge
Kanady Road
Rodney Nix Road
Airport Road between Post and Allen Anderson is closed
Bean Creek Rd between Gold Valley and 255 N
Hwy 115W in area of Long Mtn Road is flooding with reported roadway damage.
White County Fire Stations have been manned by off duty personnel and volunteers until further notice.
