White County Dominates in Season Opener

Sports, Team FYN Sports

For the third year in a row, the Warriors open up their season with a win over Lumpkin County.

Tonight is a great night to be a fan of the White County Warriors. The Warriors defeated their rivals, The Lumpkin County Indians, in a blowout by the score of 49-6.

There was never a moment of doubt that it would be a White County victory. Lumpkin had the ball first, and in what would be a recurring theme for both teams, QB Tucker Kirk would fumble the ball a couple plays in, and White County junior Heaven Gholston recovered. Zion McMullen would score his first of three touchdowns on the drive, giving the Warriors the lead.

Two weeks ago, the Warriors struggled in a scrimmage against Stephens County. Tonight, those struggles were in the rear-view mirror.

Throughout the game, the White County offense was too much for the Indians to handle. QB J. Ben Haynes had two rushing touchdowns to add on to Zion’s three touchdowns. One reason for this was the much improved offensive line. There were very few moments throughout the game in which Haynes was under pressure. His passing was much improved, and Warrior fans got to see his talent on full display.

White County’s Riley Stancil in the end zone after scoring his first touchdown at the varsity level.

Also, White County’s defense completely shut down Lumpkin County’s rushing attack. The defense had multiple tackles for loss throughout the night, along with a couple of forced fumbles. Coming into the season, lots of questions were being asked about the defense. Many of our best players from last year’s defense graduated, and many fans were nervous about what to expect from the defense. Tonight, they were able to completely shut down Lumpkin’s biggest strength, leaving them reeling all game long.

At the end of the first half, White County had a 31-0 lead. Zion would score his final touchdown on the first drive of the half, but the suffering wasn’t over for Lumpkin. On their next offensive, a high snap would result in the Warriors scoring a safety, as they extended their lead to 40-0. At this point, it was smart for Coach Cokely to put in his 2nd string players. They would continue to torture the Lumpkin County defense throughout the 2nd half, including backup QB Riley Stancil scored his first ever touchdown at the varsity level late in the 4th quarter.

There is still room to improve for the Warriors.

There are some slight future concerns for White County. Just like last season, the passing defense left a lot to be desired. Lumpkin County is not historically known as a team to pass the ball for lots of yards every game. However, there was multiple occasions where they gained ten or more yards on pass plays, a couple of those being a third down. As a matter of fact, the one touchdown that Lumpkin scored was through the air, attacking White County’s biggest defensive weakness. A team that specializes in passing the ball could cause real concerns for the Warriors if they don’t fix these issues.  Also, the Warriors had an abundance of penalties called against them, many of them holding calls.

The Warriors are now 1-0 on the season, and they play against another rival next week. They will be on the road to play against the Habersham Central Raiders. Even though White County dominated tonight, they will need to continue to improve if they want to have the same success throughout the season.

Two White County Players Sign to Continue Their Playing Careers

Team FYN Sports, White County High School

Two of White County High Schools top athletes have signed today, only three days away from their graduation.

Abby Taylor and Sawyer Loggins were the two athletes in the spotlight today. Abby signed on to play softball at South Georgia State, while Sawyer signed on to play at Shorter University. Both athletes spent all four years at high school playing their respective sports.

Abby spent her senior season as a catcher for the Lady Warriors, after playing multiple positions throughout her previous years. She gained lots of praise this season for being a leader on a team that had the majority of it composed of underclassmen. She will join a long list of White County softball players who have gone on to play in college in recent years, and she will be missed both on and off the field next season.

Just like Abby, Sawyer is yet another baseball player to take his talents on to college from White County. More often than not, he’s been on the mound for the Warriors throughout his tenure, and he’s consistently been one of the top pitchers in his region, along with being a solid hitter at the plate.

Congratulations to both players as they continue their playing careers.

White County Wins in a Back and Forth Thriller

Sports, Team FYN Sports

In one of the most amazing games in recent history, White County wins 27-20 against Pickens County.

Last year, the Warriors lost two games against the Pickens County Dragons. The second of those losses eliminated the Warriors from the playoffs. This year, the Warriors were able to get their revenge. But it wasn’t easy.

It only took 15 seconds for Pickens to take an early lead, as Jarod Whitmore returned the opening kickoff for a TD, giving the Dragons a 6-0 lead. However, the Warriors would fire back quickly as J. Ben Haynes would complete his first of two passing TDs of the game, finding Jesse Thomas for a 52 yard receiving TD.

Jesse Thomas (#2) celebrating with OL Cameron Sizemore (#57)

But Pickens County would not die without a fight early on. After J. Ben Haynes threw an interception on his next offensive drive, the Dragons would score again, as Whitmore scored for the second time. Late in the first quarter, Haynes would lead his team downfield and score a passing TD to Cooper Turner, giving the Warriors a 14-13 lead to end the first quarter.

As the second quarter began, Pickens County took control. Whitmore would score his 3rd rushing TD of the game to give the Dragons a 20-14 lead. They were stuffing the Warrior rushing attack while causing Haynes all sorts of problems in the pocket, including another interception. White County began to show one of their biggest flaws as well. They consistently lost yards to penalties in the 1st half, mainly due to small penalties such as false starts and encroachments.

Late in the 2nd quarter, Haynes would give the Warriors the 21-20 lead on a 49 yard rushing TD. The Warriors has struggled throughout most of the 2nd half, but that one play switched the momentum in their favor as the two teams ended the first half.

As the second half began, both teams began to deal with a factor not seen in the first half: Rain.

There was a small chance of rain coming into the game tonight in White County, but many fans at the stadium expected the weather to come afterwards. Although, everyone was in for a big surprise, as midway through the 3rd quarter, a downpour of rain came upon the football field. The fans in the stadium scrambled to get to their cars, yet the players on the field seemed to be fired up over a brand new ball game.

White County head coach Tim Cokely

The on-field product completely changed in the second half. The 2nd half was a showcase of the two defenses. Even before the rainfall came, the Warriors had a chance to score. As a matter of fact, Cooper Turner did score, but had it called back due to a holding penalty. Pickens converted on their second chance, as they would intercept Haynes for the third time tonight. But once the rain came down, both defenses began to dominate. The offenses had no choice but to throw the ball until midway through the 4th quarter when the rain stopped. Meanwhile, the defenses continuously made stops for short yards or for loss, and both teams were punting the ball back and forth.

When the rain stopped, the Warriors had the ball, and continued to run down the clock. With less than 7 minutes remaining, a key play came. 4th and 7 with the Warriors 11 yards away from the end zone. Haynes stepped back and threw a beautiful pass to Turner in the end zone, but the ball was dropped…

Pickens County had a golden opportunity, and they weren’t going to waste it. They spent 5 minutes driving the ball down field consistently with run plays. For the first time since the first half, the Warrior defense was in shambles.

Just when the game was near it’s end, the Warriors had a moment that will forever go down in their history.

Jackson Autry (#13) and Jesse Moose (#24) talking after their big defensive plays.

With 2:01 remaining in the game, Pickens QB C.J. Streicher was running the ball to his right. Multiple Warriors came in for the tackle, and caused the ball to come loose. Junior defender Jesse Moose scooped up the ball and ran it back all the way to the end zone. A stadium that was 25% full of people became 100% full of noise in the matter of seconds. The Warriors extended their lead to 27-20, but there was still under 2 minutes remaining.

Unfortunately for Streicher, he would throw an interception on his first play back on offense. Junior defensive back Jackson Autry was the one to make the interception, and it sealed the Warrior victory.

The White County Warriors are now 2-1 on the season. Next week, they travel on the road to play against their biggest rivals, the North Hall Trojans. To stay up to date with more White County Football updates, follow Team FYN Sports on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week – Jesse Moose #24

Sports, Team FYN Sports

Team FYN Sports is excited to announce the second Player of the Week for the White County Warriors – Jesse Moose. Jesse had arguably the most memorable play in recent history for the Warriors. After the Warriors caused a fumble against Pickens, the junior scooped the ball and returned the ball 80+ yards to seal the win for White County. Of all the plays in the game, this one will stick out for years to come.

Congratulations to Jesse for being selected as the Team FYN Sports Player of the Week for the White County Warriors!

Warriors defeat Rebels, 42-23

Sports, Team FYN Sports

It was a fast-paced, but slow-scoring game early when the Fannin County Rebels varsity boys took the court at White County High School.  Fannin (1-8, 0-4) came into the game ready to lay it all on the line, chasing their second win of the season.  The Warriors (7-3, 1-0) were coming off a devastating one-point loss to rival Dawson County (55-54), ready to tip the scales of the win-loss column back in their favor.

A couple of baskets by Ryan Beavers (Fannin #35) and a free throw made by Nathaniel Garrison (Fannin #3) would be all the points the Rebels could put on the board in the first quarter, while White County’s Austin Rowland (#15) managed two baskets for four points; followed by a 2-pt shot by Austin Harris (#5), a 2-pt score by Jimmy King (#12),  and 1-of-4 free throws made by Cooper Turner (#23).

After one quarter of action, White County led Fannin County 9-5.

The war of attrition continued into the second quarter, as Fannin was only able to score six points via Beavers (4-pts) and Joe Satchell (#5) who was held to only two points in the first half.  White County scored another nine points, extending their lead (18-11), with Rowland continuing to make his presence felt on the court.  He scored two baskets and went 2-for-2 on free throw attempts in the second quarter, giving him 10 points of total offense in the half.  He’d finish the night with 20 points altogether, the leading overall scorer on the night.

In the third, the Warriors came alive offensively.  Rowland and Harris came alive with a couple of 3-pointers, and the team spread the ball around with four different players putting the rock through the hoop on their way to a 15-6 run, keeping the Rebels restricted to another tough quarter offensively.

The lead would prove too much for Fannin to overcome in the fourth, as White County won by a final score of 42-23, improving to 8-3 overall.

The Rebels scoring was led by Beavers with seven points, followed by Satchell with five, Chase Culpepper with three, Cohutta Hyde with two. Nathaniel Garrison and Payton Holt each scored a free throw in the contest.

White County now looks to enjoy some time off for the holidays before facing Adairsville, Ga on Dec 28th in the Blue Ridge Holiday Tournament.  Fannin County continues their pursuit of victory this Friday when they travel to Hayesville, NC.

Dawson Tigers drop close contest against West Hall; Turn attention to White County

Sports, Team FYN Sports

The Dawson County Tigers are one possession away from a perfect season. Last Friday, September 15, West Hall, a 4A-Region 7 favorite, managed to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, but it wasn’t easy. At the end of the first quarter Dawson held a 7-3 lead, but their early touchdown would be the only time the offense found paydirt for the rest of the night.

West Hall scored a touchdown before the half, and both defenses came out swinging for the fences in the third; holding each other scoreless for 15 minutes. The Tigers kicked a field goal in the fourth, forcing a tie; but West Hall’s kicker had enough leg and accuracy to put it away for the Spartans, 13-10.

Now 2-1 overall, with a 29-14 win over Chattooga (Summerville, GA) and a 9-0 skunking of 7A-Region 5’s Forsyth Central (Cumming, GA); the Tigers turn their attention to 4A-Region 7 White County (4-1), who is coming off a big 28-18 win over a very talented North Hall squad (3A Region 7). The last time these two teams met on the gridiron, the Tigers took the Warriors to the woodshed, winning 46-0. This year’s contest will most likely be much more competitive as both teams bring solid talent and experience on both sides of the football.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm in Cleveland, Ga.

JV Dawson Tigers Capture Mountain League Championship

Sports, Team FYN Sports, WCHS Baseball

The junior varsity Dawson County High School Tigers have laid claim to the 2016 Mountain League championship, after winning a tournament at Gilmer High School last Friday and Saturday.

Dawson toppled Lumpkin 10-0 and the number-one seeded Pickens Dragons 5-2 to advance to the championship game against the number-three seeded White County Warriors.

The Tigers and Warriors quickly found themselves immersed in a pitching duel. Dawson finally broke through in the top of the third, when Nate Sorrells drew a leadoff walk and later scored with two outs after Zach Prichard singled off Warriors starter Jace Johnson. A groundout prevented Dawson from extending its lead.

The duel pressed on, with the Tigers adding a bit of insurance in the top of the seventh. Hudson Sapp and Sorrells both singled to begin the frame, with Sapp scoring on an error to give DCHS a 2-0 advantage. White County reliever Trevor Morgan managed to get out of the jam by recording a strikeout and inducing two groundouts.

The Warriors provided some late-inning drama in the bottom of the seventh. Just one out away from losing the championship game, a pair of singles paid dividends as Johnson doubled off Sorrells to tie the game, 2-2. Johnson was then caught stealing, to send the game into extra innings.

Dawson wasted little time reclaiming the lead in the eighth. Hunter Barron singled to start the inning, then later scored with one out after Wyatt Haase garnered a hit. A strikeout and groundout kept the Tigers from adding to the advantage.

White County got two runners on base with one out in the bottom portion of the eighth, but were unable to get a runner across the plate, giving Dawson the victory and the 2016 JV Mountain League championship.

“It’s amazing for us to come through like we did,” said Dawson JV coach Logan Allen after the tournament. “We played a great game yesterday and we came here today and got two wins. We had great pitching performances from Hudson Sapp, Nate Sorrells and then I brought in Austin Nix in and he did fine. Then, I brought in Hunter Barron and he had runners on first and third with one out and he kept them from scoring. It was just an amazing team effort. We started out a little slow this season, but we got better and better as the season went on. I knew it was building to this tournament. I knew as a team we were good enough (to win the championship), if we could put it together at the right time.”

JV Bobcats Remain Unbeaten

Sports, Team FYN Sports, WCHS Baseball

The wins just keep coming.

The JV Gilmer High School Bobcats reached the halfway point of the season a 9-0 team, after overcoming its toughest test to date last Friday at GHS, the White County Warriors.

The heavyweight battle ended with an 11-9 victory for Gilmer.

It took until the top of the third for any offense to be generated by either side and the blows came from White County, in the form of a six-run frame.

JV Bobcat catcher Koby Allen scrambles to cover home, during a fielder's choice in the top of the third inning last Friday against White County. Allen beat Warrior Nash Vandiver to the plate to record the first out of the inning and the Bobcats overcame a six-run deficit that was brought on in that same inning to remain unbeaten and defeat White County, 11-9. With one out and the bases loaded, Jordan Palmer drew a walk that scored Ty Ulrich. A flyout from Austin Payne to left field then scored Wyatt Sievekind, before an infield single from Weston Bray allowed Colby West to run the White County lead up to 3-0.

After Sawyer Loggins was pegged by a pitch, Chase Hicks singled to score both courtesy runner Ethan Abernathy and Loggins. Nash Vandiver widened the Warriors lead to 6-0 with a double that scored Hicks, before Gilmer reliever Bradley Thomas induced a groundout to stop the bleeding.

GHS responded to the deficit in huge fashion in the bottom portion of the third. With one out, a double from Hunter Bowyer and a single from Jonas Griggs, a throwing error scored Bowyer. Eric Turner was plunked to load the bases, before Eric Turner smacked a double that scored Griggs and Tyler Woody. Sam Nicholson followed with a double of his own that cut the White County lead down to 6-5. However, a strikeout and groundout prevented Gilmer from tying the game.

The Cats made the best of its next offensive opportunity, by pouncing for five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A throwing error and two walks loaded the bases to begin the inning, before Griggs drew a walk that scored Bradley Thomas and tied the game. Woody then singled to score Evan Frady and put Gilmer out front, 7-6.

Koby Allen followed with a double that plated Bowyer and Griggs. A wild pitch then gave courtesy runner Tripp Pierce the opportunity to sprint home and extend the Gilmer lead to 10-6. A fielder’s choice and groundout kept the Bobcats from further widening their lead.

The Bobcats added one more run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, a throwing error gave Griggs the chance to score and give Gilmer an 11-6 advantage. A strikeout quickly dampened the Cats hopes of piling on more insurance.

White County made a valiant comeback attempt with its final three outs. A pair of walks with one out came back to haunt reliever Pierce, as a triple from Payne scored West and Palmer. A wild pitch then brought Payne home, to cut the Gilmer lead down to 11-9. However, Pierce settled down and garnered a strikeout and flyout to stop the Warriors comeback attempt and give the Bobcats the victory.

After the game, JV Gilmer coach Eric Tedders gave his team credit where it was due.

“It’s hard to have anything to say about it,” Tedders said. “But the guys do really well under pressure. We’ve had a lot of teams in the past that could not (do well under pressure). They’d cave in. I hope it doesn’t get like that all the time. It’s just one of those things.”

Despite the JV Cats sitting at 9-0 for the year, Tedders insists the mindset of the team remains focused on a game-by-game basis.

“We’re 0-0,” Tedders stated. “That’s something the guys are really buying into. They understand that every night, we start 0-0. Our goal is to be 1-0 after every game. We’re going to keep that mentality and not get complacent.”

The JV Bobcats will host Dawson tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Fifty-five qualified grapplers from around North Georgia traveled to Perry last Saturday for the 2016 Georgia Little/Big Kid’s State Tournament.

Upon the conclusion of the tournament at Reaves Arena, 14 North Georgia wrestlers took home either a state title or state placement bragging rights.

Of the 28 Gilmer Bobcats that made the journey to Perry, seven left with state recognition.

In the 6U division, Isaiah Goodwin (65 pounds) captured a state championship, while Bryson Shore (37) placed second. The 8U bracket saw Hayden Berry (68) take third.

Jacob Cruz (160) finished second in the 12U bracket, while Samuel Tercero (205) placed third and fellow 205-pounder Adan Cook took fourth. Finally, the 14U division featured Caleb Waddell (120) taking third place.

The 12U Bobcats won the age bracket outright, with 53 team points and placed 10th overall at state, with a combined 159.5 team points.

“We definitely had some up and down moments in this tournament, from tough losses to some quality wins,” said Gilmer Bobcat Wrestling Club coach Walt Monroe. “Yet, our boys wrestled so well, overall. This tournament is so tough, in the full 16-man brackets. There are no classifications that divide the competitors. The coaching staff emphasized all week how each win meant points for our team and to fight hard in each match. It seems our wrestlers took that to heart, as many came away with wins, even if they didn’t place. We are so proud of the team effort. This was one of our best finishes as an entire program and we are very thankful and proud for each of these young wrestlers.”

Four out of the 12 Lumpkin County Wrestling Club grapplers at state garnered state recognition. 10U Cayden Cash (120) and 12U Devin Sullens (180) captured state championships. 12U Brent Canupp (140) and 12U Bradley Newton (140) placed, with third and fourth-place respective finishes in their brackets.

Culled from the six White County Takedown wrestlers that placed at state are 6U Jack Procter (43) and 8U Jacobi Cobbs (42), with respective third and fourth-place finishes in their brackets, as well.

Eight members of the Dragons Junior Wrestling Club also ventured to Perry, with 8U Philip Jax (60) being the lone state placer, by taking second place in his age group.

Featured, Featured Stories, Sports, Team FYN Sports

2016 #TeamFYNSports has a BIG announcement and we are very excited to share the news. The entire goal and commitment by #TeamFYNSports has always been to highlight young athletes in a positive way. FYN made a decision in 2015 to expand our coverage areas from three to ten counties.  The need for a growth driven director to lead #TeamFYNSports into the future sent us on a search.  FYN was looking for someone with character, focus, perseverance, direction, determination and an in depth knowledge of sports. Someone who shared our dedication to giving exposure to our exceptional athletes in our communities.

We are happy to announce our new Director of #TeamFYNSports – Mr. Kevin Hensley.

Kevin will be heading up our sport department. He will immediately launch a development plan to manage our reporting and new sports broadcasting in all the counties we cover.

Kevin will also be anchoring our new AM daily news show, “The Morning Report”. The Morning Report will air live weekdays 7-8 am.  Please join us in welcoming Kevin to #TeamFYNSports!  We are confident there are great things coming soon!

Kevin Hensley photoI am thrilled to join the Fetch Your News family and oversee the transformation of #TeamFYNSports. It has always been a dream of mine to be a sports reporter in some capacity and with my previous television and print sports journalism experience in mind, I can continue doing what I love on a new medium. I am eager to take #TeamFYNSports to previously unseen heights and help provide the best sports coverage.
