GHSA announces changes to playoffs

The GHSA (Georgia High School Association) has announced a few changes for the 2020 state playoffs in different sports.

Monday, Executive Director Robin Hines stated that the coronavirus would impact a number of sports when they enter postseason play when it came to attendance numbers.

The State football championship will be at full capacity in Georgia State’s Football Stadium so it will not be affected.

Basketball will see a huge change, as the state semifinals and finals games are usually played at surrounding colleges, but will not be this year. This year they will be played at high school gyms. The GHSA cited that many colleges simply are not allowing their arenas to open at all.

Hines said that the softball championships which take place in Columbus, will not have stands for fans. Attending fans will be required to bring their own chairs and seating and be required to socially distance.

Swimming finals are still set for Georgia Tech, but Hines said currently the facility is not allowing fans. The GHSA could possibly charge schools $40 per athlete to cover revenue loss and the cost of the facility.

Hines also announced the GHSA is forming a Diversity Committee.

New regions set for 2020-22 school years

Regions

There will be new school regions across north Georgia when the 2020-21 school year begins.

The appeal process for schools wishing to change regions or classifications within the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) was completed Tuesday, Nov. 19, and many area schools will soon see new foes in new places during the 2020 through 2022 school years.

After the GHSA released initial prospective region alignments earlier this month, several schools filed appeals to move to different regions or play in a different classification, including Fannin Co.

Fannin Co.’s appeal was granted, and they will play in Region 7-AA with Chattooga, Coosa, Dade Co., Gordon Central, Model, and Pepperell.

Fannin Co. had originally been placed in 8-AA but appealed due to travel times and distance.

Gilmer will move down a classification next year from Region 6-AAAA to play in Region 7-AAA. Along with Gilmer, Region 7-AAA will have newcomers in West Hall and White Co., while keeping Cherokee Bluff, Dawson Co., Lumpkin Co., and North Hall.

White Co. moves down from from Class AAAA to AAA.

Pickens will remain in Class AAAA but will move from Region 6 to Region 7. The Dragons will face Cedartown, Central Carroll, Heritage, Catoosa, Northwest Whitfield, Ridgeland, and Southeast Whitfield.

Murray Co. and North Murray remain in 6-AAA, which will include of Adairsville, Coahulla Creek, LaFayette, Lakeview-Ft. Oglethrope, Ringgold, Rockmart, and Sonoraville.

Rabun Co. and Union Co. remain in 8-AA, which includes of Banks Co., Elbert Co., and Riverside Military.

Towns Co. remains in 8-A Public, which includes of Commerce, Greene County, Lincoln County, Social Circle, and Washington-Wilkes.

Final region alignments still have to be verified by the GHSA’s Executive Committee for Reclassification, which is expected to meet in early December.

Warriors defeat Rebels, 42-23

Sports, Team FYN Sports

It was a fast-paced, but slow-scoring game early when the Fannin County Rebels varsity boys took the court at White County High School.  Fannin (1-8, 0-4) came into the game ready to lay it all on the line, chasing their second win of the season.  The Warriors (7-3, 1-0) were coming off a devastating one-point loss to rival Dawson County (55-54), ready to tip the scales of the win-loss column back in their favor.

A couple of baskets by Ryan Beavers (Fannin #35) and a free throw made by Nathaniel Garrison (Fannin #3) would be all the points the Rebels could put on the board in the first quarter, while White County’s Austin Rowland (#15) managed two baskets for four points; followed by a 2-pt shot by Austin Harris (#5), a 2-pt score by Jimmy King (#12),  and 1-of-4 free throws made by Cooper Turner (#23).

After one quarter of action, White County led Fannin County 9-5.

The war of attrition continued into the second quarter, as Fannin was only able to score six points via Beavers (4-pts) and Joe Satchell (#5) who was held to only two points in the first half.  White County scored another nine points, extending their lead (18-11), with Rowland continuing to make his presence felt on the court.  He scored two baskets and went 2-for-2 on free throw attempts in the second quarter, giving him 10 points of total offense in the half.  He’d finish the night with 20 points altogether, the leading overall scorer on the night.

In the third, the Warriors came alive offensively.  Rowland and Harris came alive with a couple of 3-pointers, and the team spread the ball around with four different players putting the rock through the hoop on their way to a 15-6 run, keeping the Rebels restricted to another tough quarter offensively.

The lead would prove too much for Fannin to overcome in the fourth, as White County won by a final score of 42-23, improving to 8-3 overall.

The Rebels scoring was led by Beavers with seven points, followed by Satchell with five, Chase Culpepper with three, Cohutta Hyde with two. Nathaniel Garrison and Payton Holt each scored a free throw in the contest.

White County now looks to enjoy some time off for the holidays before facing Adairsville, Ga on Dec 28th in the Blue Ridge Holiday Tournament.  Fannin County continues their pursuit of victory this Friday when they travel to Hayesville, NC.

Warriors Slay Dragons at Mountaintop Tourney

Sports, Team FYN Sports, White County High School

Courtside coverage provided by Reagan Young, TeamFYNSports Reporter

This past Friday at the Mountaintop Holiday Classic, the White County Warriors and the Pickens County Dragons traveled to Fannin County for their match up on day two of the tournament. Both teams were coming off of a loss from the first day of the tournament and ready to walk away with a win.

It was a high action and fast paced game from the start. The Dragons made the majority of their points from down low while the Warriors did most of their damage from driving the lane. Dragon post, Seth Bishop, led Pickens in scoring from the block with twenty-one points. Warrior guard, Austin Harris, led his team in scoring with twenty-four points due to his hustle. Warrior post, Austin Rowland, had the hustle on defense to make steals and contribute twelve points for his team. With the Warriors in the lead near the end of the third quarter, Pickens makes a buzzer beater shot to tie the game 17-17.

The hopes were high at the beginning of the second quarter. Both teams had the same chances of winning and were not giving up. The lead went from team to team and it became unpredictable on who would have it next. Warrior, Chandler Harris’s outside shooting came alive which put eleven points on the board for White County. Warriors, Reece Dockery and J. Ben Haynes, also had a good game above the key by each adding five points to White County’s score. The Warriors took a seven point lead over the Dragons at the end of the second quarter by making the score 29-22.

With Pickens down more than they had been the entire game, they were determined to make a come back. Both teams applied heavy defensive pressure on the other by putting a full court press into action. The press resulted in both teams getting steals and adding onto their score. At the end of the third quarter, White County doubled their lead over Pickens with a score of 47-33.

Pickens picked up the pace at the start of the fourth quarter. The Warriors start to put even more defensive pressure on the Dragons and draw fouls. Warrior, Jay Lepkoske, contributed one of his five points from the free throw line. The Warriors also started to have good looks inside which resulted in Kaleb Crane’s overall four points. Warriors, Daniel Rowland and Cooper Turner, followed the trend and each added four points onto White County’s score. However, the Warriors were not the only ones adding onto their score. The Dragons came back at the end of the fourth quarter with a score of 53-53, putting the game into overtime.

The intensity came alive at the beginning of the quarter. Both teams had four minutes to win the game. Pickens finally took the lead that they had been working for the whole game just to have the score tied once again at 63-63, putting the game into double overtime.

Four more minutes were put on the clock as both teams gave the game their all. The quarter was filled with hustle after loose balls, fouls from attempting to keep the other team from scoring, and heart. The back and forth of the game had everyone on their feet as they watched with anticipation. Although both teams played to the best of their ability, the White County Warriors had a 74-67 victory over the Pickens County Dragons.

The White County Warriors win puts their overall record at 9-4 while the Pickens County Dragons stand at 4-9. Catch the Warriors next game on January 2 at 5:45 as they travel to take on North Cobb Christian!

White County Warriors varsity boys off to strong start

Team FYN Sports, White County High School
White County Warriors

White County boys varsity head coach Sam Borg has much to proud of, despite his team’s 2-game losing streak going into this week’s schedule. The Warriors (6-2, 0-0) travel to Gainesville this Friday to enter Region 7-AAAA play at Chestatee (2-4, 0-0), where coach Borg and his varsity look to improve their record and turn their season back in the right direction.

The Warriors kicked the season off with a dominant 78-57 victory at Tallulah Falls on November 16, followed by a 20+ blowout over Habersham Central (Mt Airy) at home (74-56) just two days later.

On November 20 the boys defeated Coahulla Creek (Dalton) 73-41 and after the first three games of the season it appeared no one was ready to challenge White County.

The next day, however, Franklin County (Carnesville) gave the Warriors a great contest as White County won their closest game of the season, 64-58.
White County then hosted North Hall and won another hard-fought battle, 59-48, closing out the November schedule with an undefeated 5-0 record.

December 1, White County kicked off their December schedule with a 69-46 blowout over Lumpkin County, but later in the week Franklin County High School would get their revenge in a rematch from early in the season. The Warriors played Franklin close but fell by a final of 60-52, their first loss of the season.

On December 11, the Warriors once again found themselves in a thriller, but this time it would be East Jackson pulling off the buzzer-beating win (74-71).

“We’ve got a great group of guys,” coach Borg told TeamFYNSports.  “We’re excited to start region play this week and we’re looking forward to the Christmas Tourney in Fannin next week.”

White County now looks to win their first region game of the season, before hosting Dawson County on December 18, and then Fannin County on December 19 to finish out their schedule before the new year.

Dawson Tigers drop close contest against West Hall; Turn attention to White County

Sports, Team FYN Sports

The Dawson County Tigers are one possession away from a perfect season. Last Friday, September 15, West Hall, a 4A-Region 7 favorite, managed to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, but it wasn’t easy. At the end of the first quarter Dawson held a 7-3 lead, but their early touchdown would be the only time the offense found paydirt for the rest of the night.

West Hall scored a touchdown before the half, and both defenses came out swinging for the fences in the third; holding each other scoreless for 15 minutes. The Tigers kicked a field goal in the fourth, forcing a tie; but West Hall’s kicker had enough leg and accuracy to put it away for the Spartans, 13-10.

Now 2-1 overall, with a 29-14 win over Chattooga (Summerville, GA) and a 9-0 skunking of 7A-Region 5’s Forsyth Central (Cumming, GA); the Tigers turn their attention to 4A-Region 7 White County (4-1), who is coming off a big 28-18 win over a very talented North Hall squad (3A Region 7). The last time these two teams met on the gridiron, the Tigers took the Warriors to the woodshed, winning 46-0. This year’s contest will most likely be much more competitive as both teams bring solid talent and experience on both sides of the football.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm in Cleveland, Ga.

Could Major Changes in 7-AAA Football be Coming?

Sports, Team FYN Sports

Now that the regular season has come and gone, post-season GHSA changes start. The 2016-17 football scene could change for several teams. The realignment comes after a vote to make a new region “Super 44” which puts the top schools with 2,000+ kids in one super region. Now this changes everything from 6A to 1A. For every team that moves up or down another team has to do the same. Schools like Buford who have more than 3% of its kids outside the county are forced to move up with the new rules. Fannin and Banks Counties are looking like they will move down to AA, while East Hall, Lumpkin, Franklin and West Hall are moving to AAAA. Dawson County will remain the only 7-AAA team if all this plays out like suggested. It is unclear just yet as to what region Fannin will move to, but when we find out after the GHSA makes the changes later this year TeamFYNSports will keep you updated.

Here is a look at what things could look like next football season. Click Here
