Murphy warns city, county officials to brace for very serious weather system

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – White County Public Safety Director David Murphy briefed city and county officials Saturday (April 11) on a severe weather system that has the potential to be in the top five most severe systems in the last 10 years.

“Comparing to the last 15 events of similar nature, this storm system is likely to produce damaging winds, tornadoes, heavy rain with potential flooding and significant hail,” Murphy said.
“All risk categories with the exception of hail has increased and could likely increase further east as the system develops in the next 24 hours.”
The National Weather Service warned that all of north and central Georgia will be in the higher risks categories, starting Sunday afternoon, and lasting through the night, into Monday. Confidence for damaging winds and tornadoes is a four (4) out of five (5).
Said Murphy, “This storm system requires all of us to pay attention to weather events as they develop, monitor states to our west and prepare for the storm to move over our area. All departments, both city and county need to review your emergency plans, and prepare to respond and activate your systems. Off duty personnel are subject to recall, be on alert.”

New app will deliver emergency notices to White County residents

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – Through an existing contract with OnSolve LLC, will begin delivering public safety alerts through the company’s public safety app of choice, the CodeRED Mobile Alert.
The app, which is a free download on the App Store and Google Play, will allow White County residents and visitors to receive free emergency, missing person and community alerts via push notifications directly to their iPhone and Android devices.
David Murphy, Public Safety Director, said the new platform will serve as an additional tool to help inform the community and visitors about important information that may impact their safety. “The app works similarly to our current CodeRED system. If you have the app downloaded and are in an affected area of the alert, a notification will be sent through the app to alert you of the issue,” Murphy said.
County residents can sign up for Code Red in several ways. From the county website at www.whitecounty.net from the White County Public Safety Facebook page by clicking the Sign Up button or by texting “WhiteCoAlerts” to 99411 to sign up.
Residents are encouraged to sign up immediately to begin receiving notifications from White County. The app is available for a free download on the App Store and Google Play.

White County orders out-of-town visitors to leave

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – Out-of-town visitors staying at overnight accommodations in White County are ordered to leave by noon Saturday (Apr. 4).
In a called teleconference meeting Thursday, the White County Board of Commissioners approved an amendment to its COVID-19 State of Emergency Resolution that closes all hotels/motels, inns, short-term vacation rental cabins, campgrounds, recreational vehicle parks and resorts at noon Saturday.
Those facilities will remain closed until April 13 but the amendment could automatically renew should Gov. Brian Kemp extend the state’s shelter in place order.
“We do this with a heavy heart,” Commission Chairman Travis Turner said. “Any other time, we welcome tourists. Unfortunately we have to take these measures to protect our citizens from visitors potentially spreading the Coronavirus in our county.”
Commissioner Terry Goodger said, people have not obeyed the emergency resolution so we have to enforce it the best way we can.”
