CLEVELAND, Ga. – A tip from an inmate led to the arrest of a Georgia Department of Corrections officer last week.
According to the arrest report, an inmate at the Colwell Correctional Facility in Blairsville who was on a work detail in Cleveland, told City of Cleveland Shop Department foreman Ricky Hunt that Levi Jehu Franklin, had stolen brass water meters from the shop,
According to the inmate, Franklin placed them in five-gallon buckets and loaded them in the back of the inmate van.
Hunt reported the information to Cleveland Police Chief John Foster, who followed the inmate van back to Colwell Correctional Facility in Blairsville in an unmarked vehicle. Franklin escorted the inmates inside then returned to the van and removed two buckets from the van and placed them in the back of his personal vehicle.
Foster notified Woodrow Tripp with the Office of Professional Standards CID for the Georgia Department of Corrections that he would be seeking warrants. Tripp arrested Franklin in Blairsville and transported him to the White County Detention Center.
The arrest report stated Foster interrogated Franklin and when he confronted him with evidence that he sold the meters to DHQ Scrap Metal in Morganton, Franklin admitted stealing them.
