Trio arrested on drug-related charges

CLEVELAND, Ga. – What started out as a routine traffic stop for an apparent violation of Georgia’s window tinting law turned into something a lot more serious Thursday.

White County Deputy Adam Ramey was patrolling on Helen Highway when he witnessed a dark green Dodge Charger that appeared to have a tinted windshield. When the vehicle stopped and the officer approached, he noticed it did not have a tinted windshield. He informed the driver, Zachary Garrett, that due to the dark color of the vehicle and how bright the sun was that day, it made it appear that the windshield had too dark of a tint.

Before sending the driver and his three passengers on their way, however, Ramey noticed the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

Garrett said he didn’t smoke marijuana and that there was none in the vehicle.

But the fact that Ramey had detected the odor of marijuana gave him probable cause to conduct a search so he asked Garrett and his passengers – Michelle Hahn, Alec Pearce and Taylor Waring — to step outside and to the front of his patrol car while he and Deputy Daniel Amoling searched the vehicle.

What they found was a small glass container with a white powder residue inside, a small quantity of marijuana, two small bags with a white powder substance consistent with cocaine, an unidentified white pill, wax paper with a substance inside it, another small glass container with a waxy substance consistent with THC wax and several containers of THC oil.

Garrett, 29, Hahn, 21, and Pearce, 26, were placed under arrest and transported to the White County Detention Center.

On the positive side, Garrett was not ticketed for a tinted windshield.
