Clarkesville Man Injured in Crash on Hwy. 115

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Kenneth Tipton, 50, of Clarkesville was seriously injured in a three-vehicle accident on Hwy. 115 at Dixon Drive when his Harley Davidson motorcycle was rear-ended at approximately 8:35 a.m. Thursday.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, Tipton was slowing his motorcycle as the vehicle in front of him, a 2002 Isuzu pickup truck driven by Zachary Hockaday, 27, of Demorest, was attempting to make a left-hand turn into a private driveway.
Tipton’s motorcycle was struck by a 2005 Chevy Equinox SUV driven by Jennifer Roberts, 27, of Cleveland, pushing him and the motorcycle under the pickup truck.
Roberts told the GSP reporting officer Sgt. Allen she did not see the vehicles in front of her had stopped.
Tipton was transported by White County EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he is believed to be in serious condition.

Our interview Friday with Speaker of The House David Ralston focused on rural Georgia. Ralston went into detail about the new Rural Georgia Economic Council. This council will be co-chaired by (R) Terry England from Auburn, (R) Jay Powell from Camilla and Vice Chair (R) Sam Watson from Moultry. The council will be holding meetings across Georgia to hear from elected officials, local businesses and citizens about how they feel rural Georgia economy can best be improved. Ralston said jokingly that he better not find out that one meeting took place in Atlanta.
Health care is a major concern in rural Georgia. Several hospitals have closed in rural Georgia areas including one in Ralston’s district in North Georgia. We spoke to Ralston abut one possible solution to meet rural Georgia health care needs. Ralston used the example of the first stand alone emergency room, opened by Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Gilmer county. In this interview we asked Ralston if Gilmer county still had the possibility of having a full hospital.
Ralston told us that sometime within the next month Governor Nathan Deal would be visiting Gilmer county’s Fire Station 1 to sign the fire fighter’s workmen’s compensation bill. We asked Ralston the difference in this years campus carry bill opposed to last year’s bill which Governor Deal vetoed. Not being able to speak for the Governor, Ralston said he felt they made the changes necessary to get Deal to sign the bill. We also discussed the pay raises agreed upon in the 2017 legislative session for teachers, state law enforcement, and D.F.C.S workers.

Teen Leads State Patrol on a Chase Through Lumpkin and White Counties

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – A Gainesville teenager led Georgia State Patrol in a two-county car chase that began about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday on Ga. Hwy. 60 in Lumpkin County and ended on Hwy. 115 in White County when Cadet Richard Holman executed a pit maneuver ending the chase.
According to Robin Moore of the Georgia State Patrol office in Cumming, “The suspect vehicle, a 2017 Jeep Patriot, immediately fled from Trooper 1st Class Gianoulis of Post 37 in Cumming and Cadet Holman, who is in field training, when they attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver of the Jeep, Devon Reid, 18, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, misdemeanor obstruction and numerous other charges.
A passenger in the vehicle, Dylan Reid, 17, of Gainesville, was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Both were transported to the Lumpkin County Detention Center.
The other passengers in the Jeep were identified as Erin Pope, 17, of Dawsonville and Eric Cox, 22, of Flowery Branch and a 16-year-old female. They were released into their parents custody.

Cleveland Man Leads State Patrol on a High- Speed Chase Through Rabun County

CLAYTON, Ga. – A Cleveland man led Georgia State Patrol and law enforcement units from Rabun County, Sky Valley and Dillard on a high-speed chase Thursday, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph before crashing his motorcycle as he attempted to turn right onto Ga. 246 headed toward Sky Valley.
According to State Trooper 1st Class Jesse Lewis, he first noticed a motorcycle with no registration plate and attempted to make a traffic stop near Tallulah Falls. Lewis said, 45-year-old Eric Anthony Moss indicated he would pull over but then accelerated.
Lewis’ report states the chase lasted about nine minutes and, at a point near Ga. 15, he fell behind a unit from Dillard Police Department. “When they negotiated the turn at Ga. 246, Lewis said, “I observed that the violator had crashed and Dillard PD was handcuffing the violator. I assisted with the arrest and advised the violator he was under arrest for fleeing and eluding.”
Lewis said Officer Parker with the Dillard PD also confiscated a green, leafy substance from Moss’ motorcycle believed to be marijuana. Moss was transported to the Rabun County Detention Center where he faces multiple charges, including felony fleeing, reckless driving, aggressive driving, driving with a suspended license, failure to obey a traffic control device, no proof of insurance on a motorcycle, failure to signal when changing lanes, failure to change address on identification card, failure to maintain lane, passing on the shoulder of the road, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
He also faces additional charges in Dillard and Mountain City.
Two Injured in Early Morning Crash in Helen

HELEN, Ga. – Two people suffered what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries in the pre-dawn hours Sunday morning.
According to a report from Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville, David Dority, 34, of Peachtree Corners was traveling southbound in a 2007 Chevy Cobalt when he failed to negotiate a curve. The car traveled off the west shoulder of the road, began to rotate counter clockwise and reentered the roadway. It then crossed the center line into the northbound lane of Ga. 75.
In an effort to avoid a collision, Sadie Johnson, 38, of Helen, who was driving northbound in a 1996 Chevy Lumina, traveled off the east shoulder of the roadway. The front driver’s side of her vehicle struck the front passenger’s side of Dority’s vehicle. The force generated by the collision caused the rear passenger’s side of Dority’s vehicle to strike the driver’s side of the Johnson vehicle.
Dority has been charged with DUI, failure to use a seat belt, failure to maintain lane and driving on the wrong side of a roadway. He was injured and transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Johnson, 38 also was injured and transported to NEGMC.
Cleveland Highway Accident Injures Family

CLEVELAND, Ga. — Three people were injured Tuesday when they were involved in a three-vehicle accident on Ga. 11 (U.S. 129) at Rogers Road in White County.
Trooper 1st Class Jordan Stamey of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville investigated the wreck and reported that 10-year-old Kaeden Willis, of Cleveland, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. The child was later airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where he is believed to be in serious condition.
Willis’ parents, Christopher Willis, 36, and Jamie Willis, 36, were also transported to Northeast Georgia Medical center and treated for minor injuries before being released.
According to Stamey’s report a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Jancedyn Terry, 17, of Cleveland was stopped on Rogers Road facing west at its intersection with Ga. 11. A 2002 Kia Sportage driven by Christopher Willis was traveling north on Ga. 11 approaching the intersection with Rogers Road.
A 2007 Peterbilt tractor with empty flatbed trailer driven by Lamar Webster, 62, of Cleveland, was traveling south on Ga. 11 in the right lane negotiating a curve as it approached the intersection with Rogers Road.
Terry’s vehicle failed to yield and turned right into the path of Wills’ Kia. Wills steered left in an attempt to avoid impact into the southbound lane of Ga. 11. He then steered to the right and re-entered the northbound lane but over-corrected and lost control of his vehicle which then started to rotate counter-clockwise as it crossed the northbound lane and traveled into the southbound lane.
At that time, the tractor-trailer was changing into the left southbound lane. The Kia struck the left rear wheel of the tractor with its right front fender. After that initial contact, the Kia then struck the tractor trailer in the left side and left rear wheel of the trailer with its right front corner. After the second impact, the Kia came to rest in the road facing east.
No citations were issued pending an investigation.
Firefighters Rescue Hiker Who Fell From Top of Raven Cliff Waterfall

CLEVELAND, Ga – An unidentified hiker was injured Wednesday when he fell from the top of the waterfall area of Raven Cliff at about 3 p.m.
White County Public Safety Director David Murphy said in an email that the hiker had gone to the top of the falls where he slipped and fell onto the last ledge before the main drop of the falls (approximately 55 foot vertical drop). White said firefighters from White County’s Stations 2 and 3 with mutual aid from the City of Helen Fire Department and Lee Arrendale Fire Brigade responded to the call and removed the hiker from the falls to an area where Georgia State Patrol aviation using a Bell 429 helicopter with a hoist extracted the hiker and transported him to White County Med 2 where he was further evaluated and then transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment.
White said the injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
White, Lumpkin County Authorities Search for Robbery Suspect Who Shot a Man Monday

CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County Sheriff’s Office, Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol and a K-9 unit from Alto are searching this morning for a suspect who robbed Woodlawn Gardens and Farms at 3778 Hwy. 254 in White County at about 10:30 p.m. Monday and shot an unidentified male.
White County Sheriff Neal Walden said the suspect is a white male with a tattoo on the left side of his face who was wearing a hoodie at the time of the robbery.
Walden said the victim was transported by White County EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries.

Lost Hiker Located and Led to Safety

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. — White County firefighters. the Georgia State Patrol and U.S. Forest Service were called on to rescue a lost hiker Wednesday evening.
The hiker had driven to US Forest Road 79 (Tray Mountain Road) in northern White County to begin the hike. White County Public Safety Director said he apparently became lost after veering off the path and could not find his way back to his vehicle.
Firefighters were contacted and they called in a Georgia State Patrol helicopter. The lost hiker was able to talk directly to the helicopter crew who guided the to Odis Barron Road in Habersham. U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement met him and escorted him to safety. He was not injured.
The incident lasted about 3 1/2 hours.
School Bus Involved in Minor Accident but no Injuries

CLEVELAND, Ga. — A White County school bus transporting students home from Mossy Creek Elementary School was involved in a minor accident at about 3:17 p.m. Wednesday. The accident took place on South Main Street near Tractor Supply.
White County School Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson reports that a car pulled out onto Hwy 129 and sideswiped the bus. “There were two students on the bus but the good news is that no one was injured,” he said.
There was little damage to the bus which had to remain on the scene until Georgia State Patrol could investigate and the students were transported the rest of the way home by another bus.
Child Struck by Pickup Truck in Ingles Parking Lot

CLEVELAND, Ga. — A three-year-old child was seriously injured today when he was struck by a pickup truck in the parking lot of Cleveland Ingles store.
Cleveland Fire Chief Ricky Pruitt said the child’s mother was placing groceries in the back of her car when the pickup truck backed out of the opposite parking space and pinned the child between the truck and his mother’s car.
Paramedics arrived and performed CPR and a helicopter was called to airlift the child but due to his condition, he was transported instead by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Cleveland Woman Injured in Hwy 129 Wreck

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Four people were hospitalized after an SUV and a Mountain Medical Transport Ambulance collided Friday morning on Cleveland Highway near Deer River Trail.
Georgia State Patrol Sergeant A.W. Coleman reported that the Ford Expedition SUV was negotiating a curve when it traveled off the east shoulder, before over correcting and crossing the north bound lane and the center line.
According to Coleman, the Expedition struck the ambulance on the driver’s side with its driver’s front quarter panel before overturning multiple times and coming to rest off the east shoulder of the roadway. The impact from the Expedition caused the ambulance to exit off the west shoulder of the roadway and overturn multiple times before coming to rest on its top.
Two people from each vehicle were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment. Coleman identified the driver of the SUV as Sherri Bruce, 37, of Cleveland. He identified the Expedition passenger only as a juvenile.
The ambulance occupants were identified as Zachery Vaughn, 26, and Stephen Peachey, 28. Their cities of residence were not immediately available.
Coleman said that Bruce is being charged with failure to maintain lane. The extent of her injuries is unknown. The others were minor injuries.
Cleveland Highway was closed at the accident scene for investigation and clearing of the wreckage. The road reportedly opened for traffic again before noon.
Teenage Pedestrian Killed Crossing Ga. Hwy. 11

CLEVELAND, Ga. — Stormi Whisnant, 19, of Clarkesville was killed last night when she was struck by a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Misty Grindle of Cleveland while crossing Ga. Hwy. 11 near the Walmart Shopping Center in White County.
A press release from the Georgia State Patrol indicates that Whisnant was wearing black pants and a black shirt when she entered out onto the roadway from the concrete divider walking east into the path of the vehicle.
The report states that the driver was unable to avoid striking her and immediately pulled into the right turning lane and stopped.
White County EMS advised the female subject was not responsive and had no pulse upon arrival.
Pedestrian Killed by Vehicle on US 129

Georgia State Patrol Identifies Man Killed in White County Crash

CLEVELAND, Ga. — The Georgia State Patrol has identified the victim of Saturday’s single-vehicle fatal crash on Town Creek Road west of Cleveland as Lance David Artis, 30, of Cleveland.
Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Coleman of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville said Artis died of his injuries after being thrown from his 1997 Audi A4 while driving north on Town Creek Road.
After negotiating a left curve, Artis’ car started to skid, crossed the centerline and continued off the west shoulder, striking an embankment, Coleman said. Upon striking the embankment, the car began to overturn multiple times, ejecting Artis.
Artis was airlifted by a medical helicopter from Gainesville-based AirLife Georgia 2 to Atlanta Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
