Mr. Paul Hubert Shahan, age 59, of Helen, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018.
Mr. Shahan was born in Floyd County to the late Paul Dean (P.D.) and Mary Lou Selman Shahan. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Charles Dean Shahan. Mr. Shahan graduated from Darlington School with high honors, was a Dean’s List Graduate of Georgia Tech in 1980, and was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He was a Statewide Manager for Georgia Power, retiring after 36 years of service. Mr. Shahan was a member of The Bridge Church, an avid fly fisherman and fly tyer, played guitar and “Loved to be a Yellow Jacket.”
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Jody Shahan, Helen; sons, Paul Michael (Michael) Shahan and James (Jamie) Davidson Shahan; mother in law, Mrs. Charlie Davidson; In Laws, Greg Davidson, Sautee Nacoochee and Mike and Missy Davidson, Marietta; nieces and nephew, Chase Davidson, Captain Tedi Davidson, USMC, Mackalie Davidson, Mackenzie Davidson, and Lindie Davidson.
Memorial services are scheduled for 4:30 PM Friday, September 28, 2018 at The Bridge Church. The Rev. Patrick Ballington will officiate.
A time for sharing memories with family and friends and a reception will immediately follow the service.

Carolyn Smith Moorman: Obituary

Cleveland Funeral Home of Cleveland, Georgia announces the death of Mrs. Carolyn Smith Moorman, age 81 of Cleveland who passed away peacefully at her home on September 28, 2018.
Mrs. Moorman was born in Johnson County on January 8, 1937 to the late James Harold Smith and the late Sally Stephens. Carolyn and her husband Wyndal have resided in White County for the last 28 years, after relocating here from Laurens County. While in Laurens County, Carolyn worked for the school system as a Lunch Room worker.
In addition to both parents, Mrs. Moorman is Preceded in death by a son, Michael Moorman. In addition to her loving husband Wyndal Moorman, she is survived by a Daughter, Karen Runyan of Cleveland; Brother, Harry Smith of Dublin; Grandchildren, Anson Rountree and Caroline Shillingburg. She is also survived by 5 Great Grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. in Westview Cemetery in Wrightsville, Georgia.

News September 11, 2017
- Union County Schools will be CLOSED Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th due to Gov. Nathan Deal declaring a state of emergency for all 159 counties in Georgia. Please continue to monitor here for further updates.
- Fannin County Schools will be closed for students and all personnel on Monday, September 11 and Tuesday, September 12, for students, as well as all faculty and staff, except for 12-month personnel, district directors, and principals. As long as it is safe to do so, all 12-month personnel, as well as district directors and principals, should anticipate reporting by 9:00 a.m. on September 12. These personnel should note, though, that this expectation may be revised, depending on the weather conditions overnight; nonetheless, if you ever believe it is unsafe to report, please notify your immediate supervisor. In addition, the Board of Education work session meeting that was scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, has been cancelled. Please continue to stay safe!
- Pickens County Schools closed Monday, September 11th – TWELVE MONTH EMPLOYEES REPORT AT NORMAL TIME. Schools will also be closed on Tuesday, September 12. Twelve month employees will be contacted late Monday as to whether they will be required to come to work on Tuesday. All school activities, including athletic events and after-school programs, will be canceled.
- Gilmer County Schools will be closed Monday, September 11th and Sepember 12th due to Hurricane Irma. We have made this decision after consultation with local emergency management authorities and careful consideration of safety factors, such as the probability of severe winds especially at higher elevations, debris, dangerous road conditions and downed power lines left in its wake. Only 12 month staff should report if safe to do so.
- Dawson County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Twelve month employees will operate on a 2 hour delay.
- Lumpkin County Schools closed due to the weather forecast for our area, Lumpkin County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. The anticipated high winds pose a significant threat to our students and staff. We understand that weather predictions are not always accurate, but we cannot ignore the potentially dangerous situation that this storm poses. Our number one priority is to keep our students and staff safe! Wednesday will still be a early release day as planned so that teachers will be available for parent conferences. 12 month employees should report if it is safe to do so.
- Towns County Schools closed Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th for all students. All employees should report at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 12th if safe to do so.
- White County Schools due to the severe weather forecast, White County Schools are closed for students and staff Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Please be safe!
- Murray County Schools closed Monday September 11 and Tuesday September 12, due to the possible impact of Hurricane Irma. We have made this decision after consultation with local emergency management authorities and careful consideration of safety factors, such as the probability of severe winds, debris, dangerous road conditions, and downed power lines. We understand that weather predictions are often incorrect, but the size of this storm cannot be ignored. It is our hope that Murray County is spared from any of this storm’s impact, but we will always choose to error on the side of caution. All events planned for Monday and Tuesday evenings are also cancelled. This includes the September 11 MCPS Board meeting. Winter Weather Preparedness Week

Winter Weather Preparedness Week is Nov. 27 – Dec. 1
(Cleveland) –White County, along with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency’s (GEMA/HS) Ready Georgia campaign, is encouraging citizens to take time to prepare for possible inclement weather emergencies this winter.
“Winter Weather Preparedness Week is a great time for White County residents and businesses to prepare for all potential winter hazards,” said David Murphy, Public Safety Director. “Since winter weather can be unpredictable, we’re hopeful these plans and education on potentially dangerous storms encourage residents to prepare for severe winter weather.”
Winter Weather Preparedness Week, from Nov. 27 – Dec. 1, was created to raise awareness of winter weather hazards and reinforce understanding of winter weather terminology. Throughout the week, White County and Ready Georgia encourages all Georgians to prepare for severe weather and restock necessary supplies.
Each day concentrates on different aspects of severe winter weather and provides critical information for preparedness. The focus for each day is as follows:
Monday, Nov. 27: Winter Weather in Georgia — learn about winter weather hazards that can impact the state of Georgia
Tuesday, Nov. 28: Winter Weather Terminology — learn about winter weather alerts (watches, warnings and advisories) and what they mean
Wednesday, Nov. 29: Winter Weather Preparedness Tips — learn how to best prepare for winter weather events, and put together a Ready kit while making a plan before winter weather strikes
Thursday, Nov. 30: Winter Weather Driving Tips/Safety — learn best practices for driving (if necessary) in winter weather conditions and how to pack a mobile Ready kit
Friday, Dec. 1: Winter Weather Outlook for 2017-18 season
In addition to following the preparedness tips provided each day during Winter Weather Preparedness Week, citizens are encouraged to prepare themselves, as well as their families and pets, for inclement weather during the winter months by adhering to these tips:
- Prepare a Ready kit of emergency supplies for your home. Include at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food and water, a flashlight with extra batteries, a NOAA Weather Radio, adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm, as well as additional supplies for the unique needs of your family, such as medication or pet Ready kits.
- Keep an extra Ready kit in the trunk of your car. In addition to the basic essentials listed above, consider adding a portable cell phone charger, ice scraper, extra blanket, sand for traction and jumper cables.
- Create an emergency communications plan so family members will know who to contact if separated during a storm. Designate at least one out-of-town contact. Determine a way to let family and friends know you’re OK if the power goes out. Create a customized plan for your family using the Ready Georgia website or mobile app.
- Make sure you have a way to stay informed about winter weather. Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio or other battery-operated radio to monitor changing winter weather conditions.
- Winterize your vehicle and keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent your fuel line from freezing.
- Winterize your home by placing weather stripping around doors and windows. During cold weather, allow faucets to drip and open cabinet doors to let heat reach uninsulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
- Identify an alternate heat source, like a fireplace or wood-burning stove, and stock sufficient heating fuel or dry, seasoned wood. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off.

Governor Deal has us under a State of Emergency. Severe weather conditions, such as severe winds (especially at higher elevations), debris, dangerous road conditions, and downed power lines are all possible for our area beginning tomorrow(Monday) morning.Weather predictions are not always accurate, but this storm is massive and cannot be ignored. It is my hope that our community is spared from this, but it is better to err on the side of caution when safety is in question. Please stay safe!
- Pickens County Schools closed Jasper, Georgia — Due to inclement weather conditions,the Pickens County School District will be closed tomorrow, Monday, September 11th – TWELVE MONTH EMPLOYEES REPORT AT NORMAL TIME. Schools will also be closed on Tuesday, September 12. Twelve month employess will be contacted late Monday as to whether they will be required to come to work on Tuesday. Fire in White County
News December 5, 2016
CLEVELAND, Ga. – Firefighters from the City of Cleveland and Lee Arrendale Fire Brigade spent four hours Sunday battling a residential fire on Brookwood Village Lane. The home was badly damaged, but no injuries were reported.
White County Public Safety Director David Murphy reports that fire apparently started in the attic area and that firefighters efforts were hampered by the home’s two roofs which allowed air to flow and fuel the fire.
Murphy said the homeowner was in the neighborhood when a neighbor informed him that his house was on fire. The homeowner returned home and attempted to extinguish the fire himself before calling 911 for assistance.
The Red Cross was called to assist the family as they had no insurance.
Murphy said the fire department appreciates the homeowner trying to extinguish their fire, but said it is always wise to call 911 as soon as possible.
