New cell tower coming to White County

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – The Board of Commissioners made a major investment in security at county facilities during Monday’s combined work session and regular meeting.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a contract with ACG Solutions in the amount of $94,582.54 improvements to the security camera system at the Administration Building, animal control, the courthouse, Freedom Park, Mauney Building, Recreation Department, Senior Center and Yonah Preserve Trailhead.

In other business, the Board unanimously approved Verizon Wireless’ request to place a 185-foot cell tower on 23.13 acres at 99 R&R Drive in Cleveland.

The Board also approved two requests by William Cull for conditional use permits at 99 R&R Drive in Cleveland and 107 Farmette Drive in Cleveland to be placed in the short-term rental program.

White County Family Connections Coordinator Cheyenne Thornton provided an impressive overview of the organization’s activities and the importance of the county’s funding.

“Two of the things we are focused on are child abuse and neglect and substance abuse among middle and high school students,” she said.

Other programs Family Connection sponsors include family advocacy, holiday assistance, and a campaign to end underage drinking. Thornton said that program accentuates the positive rather than the negative. As an example, posters placed in schools no longer point out that 8 percent of underage students drink alcohol that 92 percent do not.

Commissioner Terry Goodger applauded that approach. “In a world where we learn negative things and they are sensationalized, to me, this positive campaign is encouraging and uplifting.”
