Unicoi Wildfire Update: 100 percent containment

Press Release

PRESS RELEASE

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. — The Unicoi Fire started on Feb. 12, northeast of Unicoi State Park in White County, Ga. The wildfire is now 184 acres with 100% containment. It is being managed by a Type 3 Incident Command Team with the Georgia Forestry Commission and U.S. Forest Service in unified command.

Fire crews successfully kept the fire within control lines yesterday and strengthened and improved those lines. The focus of today’s efforts will be on mopping up and patrolling to find any remaining heat sources that could threaten the lines. Additional efforts include installing water bars and spreading native seed on fire lines to reduce potential erosion.

Weather forecasts for today call for higher humidity and lower winds which will mean less severe burning conditions. There is a slight chance of rain tomorrow afternoon, and rain is likely Thursday.

Smith Creek Trail remains closed to the public. There are no road closures or evacuation warnings in place. Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area is open at this time.
