WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – White County Board of Commissioners meeting in a called teleconference meeting Thursday (April 2) adopted an amendment to resolution 2020-03 that declares the county to be in a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today’s amendment states that no new reservations at hotels, motels, inns, campgrounds, recreational vehicle camps or short-term rentals will be allowed after noon Friday, April 3. Further, anyone currently residing in such facility must vacate by noon April 4.

Chairman Travis Turner

The County Commission declared the state of emergency last Thursday. Chairman Travis Turner said at the time,

“There continues to be situations where people are gathering in places where social distancing – or keeping at least six feet apart from one another is not being practiced,” he said.

The resolution is far reaching, but generally follows the guidelines set by state and federal governments.

Businesses that must close include: Restaurant dining rooms (delivery, drive through and curbside service will be permitted); winery tasting rooms (curbside pickup of unopened containers is permitted); body care facilities, including barber shops, hair salons, nail salons, tattoo parlors and tanning salons; gymnasiums, fitness studios, spas and saunas, movie theaters and other entertainment venues.

For a complete listing of businesses that must close, you can access the resolution in its entirety on the White County website www.whitecounty.net

In a videotaped statement following the meeting, Turner stated, “I know that these closing are going to have an impact on our citizens and businesses. Please believe me when I say these decisions were not entered into lightly. But the severity this pandemic has made it necessary for us to make some very difficult decisions on behalf of our community.

“I want to thank you for your continued effort to combat the spread of the virus. Please continue to practice best habits such as social distancing, washing hands and disinfecting surfaces on a regular basis. These small steps will help protect you, your families and our community.

“I want to encourage you all to be in prayer for our community, our state and our nation. May God bless you all and our White County community.”
