Cleveland man charged with battery, false imprisonment

CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County deputies arrested Mark Dwayne Sorrows, 40 of Cleveland last week and charged him with the battery and false imprisonment of his girlfriend Nicole Marie Martin, 28.

An unidentified motorist following the vehicle Sorrows was driving observed him beating and punching a female passenger near the intersection of Duncan Bridge Road and SR 254 and called 911.

Martin escaped the vehicle and ran to the vehicle of the reporting person who then drove to Macedonia Methodist Church and awaited authorities.

According to the arrest report, Martin said she called Sorrows to ask for a ride to a store and when she got into his vehicle, he began to punch her and call her names. She told deputy Daniel Spivey he hit her several times and each time she attempted to escape, pulled her back into the vehicle and struck her again.

After interviewing Martin, deputies drove to a residence at 1613 SR 254 where they located Sorrows’ truck, but did not make contact with him. They spoke to Joseph Russini who was in the front yard but he said Sorrows was not inside and he did not know his whereabouts.

Authorities searched the residence but did not locate him. Several attempts to reach the suspect by phone were unsuccessful. Authorities located him the next day, arrested him and transported him to the White County Detention Center where he was being held on $7,500 bond.
