BOC places moratorium on conditional use permits

CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County Commissioners placed a 90-day moratorium on applications for conditional use permits (CUP) during Monday’s meeting.

The agenda item that sparked a lengthy discussion was the application submitted by a homeowner for a conditional use permit that would allow short-term rental of a home located in a subdivision. That application was denied after hearing from neighbors who expressed concerns.

But the commissioners approved a number of similar zoning requests near the end of 2018 and expect to see several more in the near future as the Airbnb and vacation rental business continues to grow in popularity.

Commissioners said they will meet with the planning commission on Jan. 17 to continue discussion of the issue. Commission Chairman Travis Turner said the Board wants to address the issue in a responsible manner that will reflect the community’s values.

Meanwhile, he encouraged homeowner association to review covenants for their subdivision to ensure they are current.
