Short Takes – A Debate or a Free For all?

Opinion

Written and Submitted by: George McClellan

To start off with, I couldn’t tell if I was watching a found copy of a lost Marx Brothers film or a cartoon rerun of Elmer Fudd chasing that wascally wabbit!  With that, I’ll admit I’m totally for Donald Trump. I’ve witnessed the miracle of his take no prisoners leadership of Americas prosperity and economic growth; how he handles foreign policy to Americas favor, his restoration of our military and his savvy business approach to management of the dysfunctional corrupt government he inherited and the efforts of elements of that corrupt government to pull him down. That includes Joe Biden. The first debate was really on trivial matters already in the public domain. It was in fact, a waste of time.

Having said that, a couple of points also need to be made. First, I wondered why Trump even bothered to debate Joe Biden because Joe’s history of gaffs, misstatements, false innuendos political failures, self-enrichment and outright lies, as he so cunningly demonstrated in last nights debate, should have rendered any such debate mute and not worth sparing over. We all already know what the issues are and the position of both candidates on them. The best advice ever given to me was never to argue with an idiot because idiot will bring you down to his level and beat you to death with his experience. Didn’t happen last night though.

The Leftist media will give Joe high marks for standing up to and “trashing” Donald Trump, and claim that Trump was still lying. Well, that might have worked once but most folks today have caught on to the MSM and don’t believe ’em anymore. Besides, every possible issue that could be debated was spit out onto that stage last night.

The Left hates Donald Trump because he’s ruined their gig!  Joe hotly claimed he was “the Democrat Party,” not Bernie Sanders or AOC, and even raised his voice to emphasize the point, He denied that he supported AOC and her Green New Deal, when he’s on record for doing exactly that. Leave it to good ol’ Joe to bring mediocrity to a new low level of mendacity.

What did surprise me was that Joe even consented to debate but on issues only important to the Left! Nobody cares about global warming or the US rejoining the Paris Climate Accords because everybody now knows that the Paris Accords were nothing more that a New World Order scam to fleece Western countries, especially the US, out of trillions of dollars to support, you guessed it, the new world order.

Speaking of global warming, Trump was correct when he said the US is the cleanest country in the world for low carbon emissions, pointing out China, India and other countries were major contributors of green house gas emissions. I was disappointed that Trump did not include the four hundred, more or less, active volcanos around the world spewing their toxic poisons into the atmosphere every minute, and dismissing outright the whole concept of human accountability as unscientific nonsense.

Of course the timing of Trumps latest Supreme Court pick took some fire but that didn’t last long because, as Trump said, he was President and, to quote a recent past President, Barak Obama: “Elections count. I won, you lost.”  Biden’s response was that the American People should have a voice in a SCOTUS nomination. Well, they did, in 2016! End of story.

I was especially amused when Joe tried to capture Trumps economic miracle as his own by claiming the Obama-Biden administration left a thriving economy for Donald Trump when we all know the Obama-Biden economy was moribund with slow to nearly non-existent growth, high black and Latino unemployment and lost jobs going abroad.

Other issues of importance to the Left were Trumps Tax returns. He’s under audit all the time and pay’s taxes in the millions. For me, I’m not worried about a billionaire becoming President, I worry about how a mere politician enters Congress and becomes a millionaire. Nobody asked Joe if the paid his taxes on his Ukraine investment or on Hunter Biden’s billions from China. Joe got right defensive over Trump bringing up the matter of his corrupt kid, but, it had to be asked.

Trump also started the revitalization of the military including cancelling out Obama’s scheme to re-educate white Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airman about the unhealthy effect of their racism because of their white privilege. OMG!

In short, Joe Biden rarely answered a direct question but framed his answers in the tedious talking points we hear daily. Remarkably Joe would not utter the words Law and Order. If he did, AOC would cast a spell on him causing his tongue to shrivel up and fall out.

Well, it was a good show I suppose. The suave Mr. Chris Wallace of Fox News, managed to maintain some control but not decorum. Trump isn’t a decorum man. Hit him and he hits back! Lie about him and he’ll correct the offender then and there. It was a Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges show, but it was entertaining. Take your pick!

Remember, freedom is the goal, the Constitution is the way. Now, go get ’em! (29Sep20)

White County Sheriff candidates debate on FYNTV

News

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – Five White County residents seeking the office of Sheriff brought their campaigns to a 90-minute candidate debate presented by Fetch Your News and the Republican Party of White County Monday.

Moderator Brian Pritchard of Fetch Your News questioned candidates on topics ranging from what they would do to improve the operation of the sheriff’s office to how they would manage the budget, especially in light of the governor’s demand that agencies reduce their budgets by 14 percent.

John Murphy said, “We are still behind in what we need to do in the computer age. We have to have more officer training, computer crimes training. Things like that will aid us to advance into the next century. We’ve got a long way to go.”

Will Garrett said, “We need AEDs (automated external debibrillators) in all patrol cars.” He also recommended deputies carry NARCAN. (NARCAN  is the common name for Naloxone, a medication used to counter the effects of opioid overdose. “That’s a great tool. It works on drug dogs. It works on kids that may happen to get into a medicine cabinet. It’s those kinds of things I want to implement within the Sheriff’s Office to bring us up to par.”

Rick Kelley, who has worked in the White County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years, received a major boost to his campaign last week when popular outgoing Sheriff Neal Walden endorsed his campaign. Kelley said he wanted to improve communications with the public by launching Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

There was some back and forth over the need for a chief deputy.

Jeff Ramey, the owner of a tow truck company who lacks law enforcement experience, said he would not have a chief deputy. “When people come to the Sheriff’s Office, they come to see the sheriff,” he said.

Aaron Autry, who ran for sheriff against Walden in 2016, said he had considered the pros and cons of the chief deputy’s position, but is undecided. “If you don’t have a chief deputy, you could allocate more funds to give a raise to your employees,” he said. “I’m not saying I wouldn’t have one and I’m not saying I would.”

The others all said the position is necessary.

Murphy, said, a chief deputy is essential. “I’ve worked in five sheriff’s offices and they all had a chief deputy. A sheriff has state meetings to attend. He has county commission meetings to attend. It takes a second hand. A sheriff is only as good as his command staff.”

Garrett said, if elected, he would have a chief deputy. “The chief deputy is a good liaison between the sheriff and the other employees. The sheriff is not able to be at every location and the chief deputy is the proper person to fill that void.”

When the question of a budget was raised, Kelley, Autry and Murphy all said they had managed the budgeting process in the past. Garrett said his experience with budgeting was very limited.

Autry then said he wanted to create a work release program to supplement the budget. “The inmates would pay for the program and the money would go back into the general fund,” he said.

But the other candidates doubted the program would work because White County doesn’t house enough inmates to support such a program.

“In White County 90 percent of our inmates are pre-sentence and we typically have only six to 12 that are sentenced and they work inside the facility,” Kelley said.

Murphy said work release worked in Hall County because there were as many as 600 inmates and 40-50 were available for work release. “There are other avenues we could look at as far as generating money, like road cleanup crews. But as far as work release, I don’t see how that would benefit White County with the inmate population we have.”

Advance voting begins May 18 for the General Primary and Presidential Preference Primary.

White County Probate Court candidates debate on FYNTV

News

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – Four strong candidates for White County Probate Judge brought their campaigns to a 90-minute candidate debate presented by Fetch Your News and the Republican Party of White County Monday.

Moderator Brian Pritchard of Fetch Your News questioned candidates on topics ranging from how they would deal with the 14 percent budget cut demanded by the governor to how they would deal with the backlog of court cases created by the coronavirus pandemic.

Two candidates – Don Ferguson, an attorney, and Carol Jackson, an Associate Vice President of North Georgia Technical College, – said being elected probate judge would require a significant pay cut, something both said they would willingly accept to serve the citizens of White County.

Ferguson said he would close his private law practice if he is elected. “It would be a conflict of interest. I also think probate court is a full time office that requires everyone’s complete and sole attention.”

None of the candidates saw the need for a tax increase to meet their departmental budgets. Randall Townley noted that since the responsibility of holding elections has shifted from the office of probate judge to the elections superintendent, the operational cost of running the office has already been reduced significantly.

Ferguson gave several specific examples of places he could cut the budget.

“There are some areas where we can trim,” he said. “There are some subscription items we can save on. There are some high-priced technology items we can save on, I think there are some insurance items we have an opportunity to save on. I’m not going to raise anyone’s taxes. I’ll do whatever it takes to meet the county’s budget goals.”

Each candidate was asked how long they would like to serve in office if elected. Cam Greene, the youngest of the candidates, said, “As long as I get in there young, hopefully I can use this as a long-term career and do exactly as Judge (Garrison) Baker has done and serve for over 30 years. Judge Baker has done a great job and I want to follow in his footsteps.”

Ferguson said two to three terms would be enough. Jackson said she would commit to serving no more than two terms. The rest said they would like to serve no more than three terms.

Jackson faced the stark reality that changes in personnel may have to take place but she said she wanted to see the approved 2021 budget before making any decisions. “If we have to cut a position, I can take up the slack and I will do that.”

Due to COVID-19, probate court has been shut down. Pritchard asked the candidates how aggressive they would be in clearing up the backlog of cases.

Ferguson said, “Court hasn’t been held in a couple of months and it may not be held for a couple more. So there is going to be a lot of tickets to resolve. We’ve just got to start court early in the morning and go through all day for as many days as it takes for those tickets to be resolved. I think the total backlog of cases can be resolved in five to 10 working days in court.”

“Jackson said, “I will be as aggressive as I need to be to move this cases through in a way that is satisfactory to the judicial system as well as the people being served.”

Advance voting begins next week in the General Primary Election and Presidential Preference Primary.

White County has a strong field of candidates competing for Sheriff

Business, News

WHITE COUNTY, Ga – Five candidates presented their best arguments as to why they should be elected White County Sheriff during a debate presented by the Young Republicans of Northeast Georgia and Fetch Your News Tuesday (Apr. 29).

Each candidate was given two minutes for an opening statement and one minute to answer questions from moderator Caleb Huiet.

AARON AUTRY

Autry has worked in public safety since 1994 in Hall, White, Habersham and Forsyth counties as well as the City of Cleveland. He is currently a Senior Motor Officer with the MARTA Police Department who ran against Sheriff Neal Walden in 2016. He was the first K-9 handler and first school resource officer in White County. Like all candidates, he is opposed to red flag laws or any form of gun control that violates a citizen’s Second Amendment rights. During closing remarks, he said his experience in enforcing the law in the metro Atlanta area below I-285 is unmatched by any opponent. “It’s unbelievable what I’ve seen out there. Sometimes it’s hard to forget.”

WILLIAM GARRETT

Garrett began working with White County Sheriff’s Office in 2005 in the detention center where he worked sRieveral years before being assigned to the civil division before going on patrol. Later, he went to the Towns County Sheriff and now works for Wilcorp, a trucking company Clarkesville. He said if elected, he will have an open-door policy, will be fair but firm and will show no favoritism.

RICK KELLEY

Kelley had 17 years of continuous service to the White County Sheriff’s Office before retiring in January to run for Sheriff. He graduated from then North Georgia College and State University with a degree in Criminal Justice. His platform includes opening up the lines of communication between the sheriff’s office and the public, creating a citizens’ police academy, implementation of a crime suppression unit, adding a K-9 Unit and school resource officers. He noted the county has only two SRO’s to cover four schools. “I’ve got a clear plan to bring the sheriff’s office and the community together, a clear plan to combat the crime problem and to work on school safety,” he said in closing. “What sets me apart is that I have 17 years’ of continuous service here in White County.”

JOHN MURPHY

Murphy has 36 years of law enforcement experience. He worked in Hall County 25 years before taking an early retirement then worked for Sheriff Neal Walden in the White County Sheriff’s Office for 11 years. He is experienced in every phase of law enforcement. Most of his career was spent in investigations. While in White County, he was promoted to captain and became division commander over court services. He is an expert in SWAT team operations and fingerprint analysis. After a lifetime in law enforcement, Murphy said, “I know what will work and what doesn’t work. I’m here to make a difference. I’m here to meet the challenge and to do what is best for White County.”

JEFFERY “JB” RAMEY

Ramey is the only candidate in the race with no law enforcement experience. He has run a towing business in Habersham County for 40 years and has been a volunteer fireman. “I’m not a career law enforcement officer but I’ve been around it all my life in the business we do. I’ve seen changes that should be made that’s not being made. I feel with these people who are running, I don’t know whether we will get those changes or not. That’s the reason I decided to step in and run for sheriff. It’s time for a change for the citizens of the county.”

All nine House of Representatives candidates debate

Politics, State & National
debate

ELLIJAY, Ga – With the Georgia Primary finally set for June 9, the nine candidates for U.S. House of Representatives District Nine seat met for a Zoom debate.

The nine Republican candidates are State House District 8 Rep. Matt Gurtler, District 50 State Senator John Wilkinson, State House District Rep. 9 Kevin Tanner,  property rights attorney Ethan Underwood, small business owner Kellie Weeks, small business owner Andrew Clyde, former law enforcement officer Maria Strickland, physician Paul Broun, and Constitutionalist Michael Boggus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmSJZuEcSq8&t=4774s

All candidates voiced their support for the big issues like Second Amendment Rights, supporting President Trump, limited government, and fiscal conservatism. However, Gurtler took the opportunity to call out fellow Georgia General Assembly members for their yearly budget votes.

“As one of the three elected officials in the State House and the Senate, I think it’s funny when I hear my opponents Tanner and Wilkinson say that they’re fiscally conservative, yet they vote for the budgets, which add a billion to 1.5 billion dollars every year to Georgians. I oppose those budgets every year and we also take one to one federal money, which adds to the national debt that’s something that I’ve been fighting for more transparency with HB4,” expounded Gurtler.

Gurtler called out Tanner and Wilkinson for “fake talking points.”

Wilkinson responded, “I’m proud of the state we live in. I’m proud to serve on the appropriations committee. I’m proud that I’ve been able to help the counties of Northeast Georgia during my service at the legislature I think that speaks for itself. When you have a triple-A bond rating, a balanced budget, and you’re the number one place in the nation to do business and a million more citizens than you did ten years ago, something must be going right and I’m proud to be part of that.

“I’m a Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, anti-federalist type politician. They believed in a limited role of the federal government. The states under the 10th amendment have certain responsibilities – transportation, education infrastructure, [and] other things are part of the [state’s] responsibility. I’m proud we have a balanced budget in Georgia, a triple-A bond rating, one of the few states in the country that does. I’m proud that Gov. Kemp continues to put forth a well-balanced, conservative budget. I’ve been proud to support that along with most every Republican in the House. We did have a few Democrats and one member of the panel who did vote against the budget.”

Kevin Tanner acts according to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

Gurtler called out their responses as “fake talking points” by Republicans, and he’s the only proven conservative in the race.

COVID-19 and State Bailouts

On the topic of COVID-19, everyone admitted the virus is real, but it’s time to safely get the country back to work.

“Certainly, the coronavirus is a health issue, not a government issue. In my opinion, Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx, and even Dr. Toomey in Georgia, they’re swamp creatures, and they have been able to accomplish what Comey, Clapper, Brennan, Strzok, and all those other people tried to do to take this president down, stated Broun. “We need to get this economy going. We need to let people be responsible for their own actions.”

“I would never diminish the fact that people are afraid,” said Tanner. “I have been surprised how quickly people are willing to give up their liberties for safety. I think that is a concern. I think we have small government overreach in many areas. I have been amazed at how well businesses have stepped up on their own.”

Paul Broun previously served as Congressman as Representative in District 10.

Many also denounced the first $2.2 trillion bill for government overreach and unnecessary spending. Gurtler said that “75 percent of the bill had nothing to do with the coronavirus.”

Wilkinson championed moving manufacturing back to the U.S. and making China accountable for some of the debt incurred by COVID-19.

Most were against a states bailout by the federal government, except Strickland.

She said, “I would think a limited amount of bailout would be appropriate to some of the states only because this a unique situation that no one expected to be getting into. Granted, the states some of them like New York, New Jersey that spent their money on illegal immigrants and all this other kind of thing. They didn’t prepare for the future. We do need to bailout some of them, but only a limited amount.”

“I think it’s fine if the states get a stimulus as long as it goes to people and the small businesses,” stated Boggus. “Small businesses [are] the backbone of this country. This stimulus should be pork-free unlike the last one and there shouldn’t be [any] ice cream bought by Nancy Pelosi.”

Underwood brought up the Federal Emergency Relief Act, which is available to all states to purchase medical equipment and relief.

debate

Ethan Underwood supported privatizing healthcare and making it more accessible to the public.

“Are the states not going to tax us? Because it seems like every level of government thinks their money comes from somebody different, and it’s all coming from us. We all the taxpayers here,” explained Weeks. “We’re all just getting billed again and again and again.”

“Several states were in trouble before this started because of irresponsible decisions at the state level. Bailouts don’t work. Bailout bills are always filled with pork and actually reward bad decisions,” heralded Clyde. “We have a huge national debt and it would be irresponsible to add more to it. We need to get the people back to work.”

Hear detailed answers from all the candidates about the next COVID-19 package, contact tracing overreach, and defunding the World Health Organization, watch the debate here.

Andrew Clyde owns Clyde Amory and U.S. Navy veteran.

Healthcare

Turning to the ongoing saga of affordable healthcare for Americans, all candidates agreed that Obamacare should be repealed.

Underwood championed a private healthcare system that travels with people. It would no longer be tied to employers, which prevents many individuals in the gig-economy from accessing reasonably priced and effective healthcare plans. He added that preexisting conditions must be factored in when creating a new healthcare platform.

“Stand firm against socialized medicine,” said Gurtler. When Republicans controlled the House and Senate, they still couldn’t repeal Obamacare.

“People in our rural areas deserve good healthcare and the best way to do that is to get the federal government completely out of it,” Wilkinson stated.

debate

John Wilkinson championed his agriculture experience and the benefit it will bring in Congress for Georgia farmers.

Broun, who previously served in Congress and worked as a physician, presented his bill that would put doctors and nurses in charge of medical decisions. “All healthcare goods and services cheaper for everybody.”

“The only solution to health care is a free-market solution,” said Tanner. “The bigger underlying problem is the pharmaceutical companies have their hand in almost every Congressional race and Congressman in Washington. They’re controlling the drug prices. Gov. Kemp appointed me to chair the mental health reform commission last year. One of the biggest challenges we faced was the pharmaceutical companies and their desire not to have changes in our healthcare system.

Strickland supported a limited bailout for some states.

Sports talk Thursday with Lauren Hunter-Politics in sports?

Sports

The U.S. Women’s National Team has been making headlines recently for victories as a team, and as individuals for political statements.

Last week, the team won their second back-to-back World Cup. Shortly after the game, player Allie Long was seen dropping an American flag during the post-game celebration. Her teammate Kelley O’Hara recognized the significance of a flag being dropped on the ground, and immediately scooped it up.

One report from The Daily Wire explained that Long dropped the flag to participate in a celebratory dance with teammate Megan Rapinoe. But the video quickly went viral and comments poured in criticizing Long for her carelessness and thanking O’Hara for stepping in.

It’s very possible that Long meant no disrespect, but just got caught up in the moment and didn’t know that an American flag is NEVER supposed to touch the ground. Nonetheless, millions of viewers were not happy.

If you watch the video, it doesn’t appear that Long is trying to make any sort of political statement by dropping the flag. However teammate Megan Rapinoe has CERTAINLY been making headlines recently for her statements.

Megan Rapinoe (far right) is a great soccer player, but her political statements anger some. Credit: The New York Times

Although Rapinoe is mainly known for being a phenomenal soccer player (she won both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards this year), her progressive ideals have, let’s just say…raised eyebrows. Rapinoe is very outspoken about her homosexuality and dislike of President Donald Trump.  She has followed the example of former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick by refusing to sing or put her hand over her heart during the National Anthem. The pose she makes after scoring a goal of standing with her arms outstretched is supposed to be a symbol of fighting for equal pay, race relations and issues at the United States/Mexican border.

For years athletes have used the attention given them for their athletic success as a means to shed light on their social platforms. There’s nothing wrong with that if they’re promoting awareness for a disease or a foundation that supports children with special needs. But should we as a society draw a line when it comes to political issues?

Some would say there’s no problem- depending on what they do to make the statement. Certainly being a famous athlete gives one more media attention than the average person. Like I mentioned in my last column post, there’s no difference in an athlete and an actor or actress, and they supply their endorsement all the time!

When Colin Kaepernick first kneeled during the National Anthem in 2016, many Americans were outraged. Not necessarily because of his protest of police brutality, but because he chose to do so in a way that many Americans found disrespectful to those who have served in the military. I was, and still am, one of those people. In my opinion Kaepernick and now Rapinoe are missing the mark. Kneeling or not showing respect during the National Anthem is to turn a blind eye to those who have sacrificed everything to give you the freedom to play your sport. It doesn’t have anything to do with first responders.

Nowadays there’s a gray area between sports segments and political talk shows. The two intersect on a daily basis. Just the other day on our live sports show, Instant Replay, my co-host Dave Garner and I had an entire segment dedicated to Nike’s decision to pull the sneakers with a design of the American flag sewn by Betsy Ross on the back. This decision was made after Kaepernick insisted that the flag had a racial history.

I thought Colin Kaepernick was out of the spotlight, but he found a way back in.

I suppose the whole reason this gray area exists is because of the technological advancements of the media. Celebrities who want use their status as a means to promote a certain viewpoint can do so more quickly because of how easy it is to post to Twitter. And in a society that demands news at every moment, something has to take up time in a sports show!

So back to the original question- should there be a line, and if so, where?

Here’s my opinion- sports is sports and politics is politics. Part of the reason I watch a football game or a baseball game is because I want to watch a football game or a baseball game. We are living in a time where politics are more divisive than ever before. One reasons sports are as big as they are today is because of the communities they create. Why should we mix something that causes so many problems to interfere with something that is supposed to help solve them?

When I turn on ESPN, I don’t want to listen to people debate over what is considered disrespectful to the National Anthem. And the next time I watch Fox News, I DARN sure don’t want to hear the name Colin Kaepernick.

Senator David Perdue Discusses Immigration Debate On PBS & NPR

Politics, State & National

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator David Perdue (R-GA) spoke with Judy Woodruff on PBS NewsHour and Ari Shapiro on NPR’s All Things Considered about theSecure and Succeed Act, legislation he has co-sponsored that mirrors President Trump’s immigration framework which resolves DACA, strengthens border security, eliminates the visa lottery, and ends extended-family chain migration.

Click here to watch the PBS interview or click on the image below.

Highlights:

Growing Support: “We’ve had 30 years of debate on the immigration issue. Democrats and Republicans at various points in time actually supported the principles laid out by President Trump in this bill. There has actually been late-coming support for this proposal. Senator Alexander and Senator Isakson have endorsed this bill.”

President’s Support: “President Trump has endorsed this proposal. We’re hopeful others will see the framework the President laid out—and what we have in this bill—actually meets the needs the Democrats have been asking for.”

Ending Incentives: “Three or four of the principles President Trump is talking about have general agreement. There is room on both sides of the issue of family-based immigration for us to get the solution we are all looking for, to end the environment that incentivizes people to bring their young children here which created the DACA situation. This would also allow us to close loopholes that let terrorists use our immigration system against us.”

Common Solution: “President Trump has been very clear for a long time about his position. He wants a solution to the problem that caused the DACA situation and he wants the DACA situation resolved. He’s gone further than any Republican ever thought that he would. We support that and believe there is enough commonality in the Senate that if everyone looks at these different principles, we’ll be able to get to a common solution.”

Click here to listen to the NPR interview or click on the image below.

Highlights:

Permanent Solutions: “President Trump stepped in and said let’s resolve the DACA problem by giving these young people a pathway and certainty. He also said we don’t want to be back here in four or five years doing the same thing with another generation of people who were brought in illegally.”

Providing Certainty: “This is a very good solution for the DACA population. It also provides certainty for the future of our borders and fixes the archaic, 50-year old immigration system that has not served us economically or socially.”

Balanced Deal: “I’m an outsider, a business guy, and I’ve done big deals before. Deals that get done have to be symmetric. This deal is symmetric. When you look at the DACA solution and then a way to end the things that created it, this becomes a very balanced proposition.”

Getting Past Politics: “At different points in the past, Democrats and Republicans have agreed to each facet of our bill that’s before the Senate today. If Congress can put partisan politics aside, I think we’ve got a proposition that could get done. I think at the end of the day it will.”
