Sautee man in critical condition following Friday wreck

SAUTEE, Ga. — A Sautee man is in critical condition today at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, following a two-car accident on Ga. 17 west of Wright Road in White County Friday morning.
According to the Georgia State Patrol accident report, Forest Bradley, 24, was traveling east on Ga. 17 in a 1986 Lincoln Towncar when he failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the centerline and was struck by an oncoming vehicle on the driver’s side.
Bradley was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical center. A passenger in his car, 25-year-old Savannah Roper of Murrayville, was suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transpored by White County EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Sherry Fry, the driver of the second vehicle, a 2003 Rav4, suffered only minor injuries. She was treated at the scene and did not require transport to the hospital.
No charges have been filed at this time.

Georgia State Patrol reminds drivers to be safe St. Patrick’s Day weekend

ATLANTA — St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend, and the Georgia State Patrol is reminding party goers to put safety first. State troopers will be on patrols keeping an eye out for impaired drivers and any other traffic violations that could potentially cause a crash.
“St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays where troopers see a spike in impaired driving,” said Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is against Georgia law and compromises the safety of everyone on the road, so if you drive impaired you will be arrested,” he added.
Last year, during St. Patrick’s Day weekend (March 16-18, 2018), Georgia State Troopers investigated 304 crashes that resulted in 178 injuries and six fatalities. In addition, troopers arrested 196 people for driving under the influence and issued a total of 2,554 citations and 3,195 warnings.
The best way to prevent alcohol-related traffic deaths during this holiday is careful planning. “Partygoers should have a plan for getting home safely if they choose to drink alcohol,” said Colonel McDonough. “Designate a sober driver or make other arrangements to get home by taxi or rideshare service,” he added.
If you are the designated driver, make sure you keep an eye out for pedestrians. Also, drive carefully and defensively. You may be sober, but that may not be true for the other drivers or pedestrians on the roads. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, do not hesitate to notify local law enforcement. You could save someone’s life.
In addition to planning a safe ride home, partygoers should stay hydrated and not leave their drinks unattended. Party hosts should serve lots of food, have non-alcoholic beverage choices, keep a watchful eye on their guests, and have the phone number of local cab companies on hand should someone need them. But most importantly, if you see someone who is about to drive impaired, try to help them make other arrangements to get home safe.

Jordan charged with aggravated assault and battery
News September 18, 2018CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Hixon Rainer Jordan Sunday morning and charged him with aggravated assault and battery on his girlfriend Jennifer King.
Deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call in reference to a vehicle in the ditch call and found Jordan who said he couldn’t remember what happened. Deputies contacted Georgia State Patrol and turned the scene over to them. After GSP completed its investigation, White County dispatch informed deputies that King wanted to file an assault charge against Jordan.
King told deputies she and Jordan spent Saturday night drinking at a bar in Helen shooting pool and watching a football game before returning to their campsite near Poplar Stump Road.
King said once they arrived they got into an argument and he pushed her, knocking over the tent they had set up. When she attempted to get up he shoved her again and she punched him in the face. Jordan then allegedly grabbed her around the throat and started choking her until she delivered a kick, causing him to relinquish his grip.
King said Jordan got into his truck and left. When he didn’t come back, she walked to a restaurant in Helen where she called her mother to come pick her up. She went to her mother’s house and went to sleep then reported to the Helen Police Department shortly after noon where she filed a complaint.
According to the report King had visible bruises that were photographed.
Jordan was charged with aggravated assault and battery and transported to the White County Detention Center where he is being held without bond.

Three people seriously injured in weekend crash on Post Road

CLEVELAND, Ga. –Three people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Post Road Friday evening.
According to the Georgia State Patrol report, the wreck occurred shortly after 7 p.m. when a 1997 Ford F-250 driven by 22-year-old Austin Scott Jarrard was traveling east on Post Road when he lost control while negotiating a left curve. Jarrard’s vehicle then spun into the oncoming lane, where it hit a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse being driven by 31-year-old Andrea Marie Bacino. Bacino and a passenger in her vehicle, 49-year-old Teresa Ann Stowers, were seriously hurt.
Jarrard was also seriously injured when his vehicle overturned. He has been charged with failure to maintain lane. All three people were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Post Road was shut down for over two hours following the accident.

Murrayville woman injured in crash on SR 115

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – A rain-soaked highway and a hydroplaning vehicle sent a Murrayville woman to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with undisclosed injuries Sunday.
According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, Joyce Cain-Bragg, 73, was driving on State Road 115 west of its intersection with Thomason Road when her 2011 Lincoln Town Car hydroplaned and veered toward the shoulder of the roadway.
The report indicates the vehicle traveled off the roadway and into a ditch rotated twice then struck the ditch, rotated clockwise then rolled onto its roof.
Cain-Bragg was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center by White County Emergency Services.

GSP gearing up for holiday travel period

ATLANTA—Georgia State Troopers are gearing up for the July Fourth holiday travel period. The holiday period begins at 6 p.m. today (July 3) and lasts for 30 hours, ending at 11:59 p.m. on July Fourth.
Last year, the holiday period was 102 hours long. The Georgia State Patrol investigated 645 traffic crashes that resulted in 323 injuries, and nine fatalities. Additionally, troopers issued 9,983 citations, 14,767 warnings, and made 288 DUI arrests.
“During the travel period, troopers will be on high visibility patrols watching for those who are driving impaired or distracted, not wearing seat belts, and other traffic violations that could potentially cause a traffic crash,” said Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “Also, please keep in mind as you travel, that beginning July 1, Georgia law will prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving,” he added.
“During this time of year, troopers report that impaired driving is one of the leading contributing factors in a majority of the fatal traffic crashes that they investigate,” Colonel McDonough said. During the July Fourth holiday period, the Georgia State Patrol will be participating in the Operation Zero Tolerance campaign against impaired drivers, where state troopers will be working alongside sheriff’s deputies and police officers to apprehend impaired drivers.

White County High, Truett McConnell students, first responders simulate car crash

CLEVELAND, Ga. — It was just a mock vehicle accident, but hopefully the students at White County High School (WCHS) got the message, especially with prom night fast approaching.
The “accident” was staged by White County Emergency Services along with students from the high school and the nursing school at Truett McConnell University (TMU). The setting was the lower parking lot at WCHS and the entire student body was on hand to witness the event.
In introducing the accident, WCHS Principal John Osborne said, “One of the most liberating things you will ever do is to get your license. But don’t ever, ever not respect what a car can do. You are literally driving a missile and you’ve got to take that seriously.”

Aden Stein, played the role of a drunk driver who faces 20 years in prison for causing the accident that “killed” 17-year-old Tiffany Partain. Those injured in the wreck included TMU students Hannah Bradley, Jendra Chaverria, Priscilla Badu, Rachel Brown, Emily Drane and Morgan Harris.
White County Emergency Services employees Ana Newberry and Josh Taylor narrated the events, explaining the actions that are taken at a fatal accident scene. Sadly, their narration struck very close to home. Newberry lost her son in a car wreck and Taylor lost his younger brother.

Throughout the event, Partain’s “lifeless” body lay on the hood of the car she was driving. First responders worked to extricate the passengers in her vechicle, TMU students Bradley, Chaverria, Badu, Harris, Brown, and Drane.
Meanwhile, a state patrol officer administered field sobriety tests to Stein before placing him in handcuffs and transporting him to jail.
Moments later, an AirLife helicopter landed to transport the injured to the hospital.
Taylor told the students looking on, “We put a lot of hard work into this. The school put a lot of hard work into this. We want everyone to learn something from this about how serious distracted driving can be.”
He talked about being on duty at the fire station the night he heard a 911 call come in about a traffic fatality. “I thought ‘Man, I hate that for somebody. They just lost a loved one,'” Taylor said. Thirty minutes later, he learned the deceased was his younger brother.

Newberry recounted to the students the day her son was killed in a motor vehicle accident. “He over-corrected while he was reaching for the phone that I was calling him on,” she said. “I had to go to the hospital because the GSP (Georgia State Patrol) would not let me go to the vehicle. There is my son coming out of the ambulance with a sheet over him,” she said as she fought back tears. “If you don’t think that affects you as a mother. I’ll never have grandchildren. He will always be 24 to me. So that phone you’ve got in your hand, put it down!”
Hopefully, the hard work by the school, first responders and students will save someone’s life.

Fleeing motorist leads deputies on chase through four counties

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. –On Monday, Sept. 30 at approximately 10 p.m., a White County Deputy Sheriff attempted to stop a Buick Century for a traffic violation on SR 384. The driver failed to yield and initiated a pursuit.
White County pursued the vehicle into Habersham County, where a Habersham County Deputy Sheriff attempted a PIT maneuver on Mud Creek Road. The attempt was unsuccessful and the pursuit continued into Hall County on SR 365.
Hall County dispatch requested a Trooper to assist. The Georgia State Patrol responded to the area of the pursuit on SR 52. After catching up with the pursuing deputies and taking the lead, the Trooper conducted a successful PIT maneuver approximately two miles inside of Lumpkin County on SR 52.
The suspect vehicle was forced from the roadway and crashed into a small ditch and cornfield. The driver fled the scene on foot.
Habersham County Sheriff K-9 and Department of Corrections bloodhound attempted a track. GSP Aviation provided assistance with FLIR. The suspect was not located, but leads have been developed. White County Sheriff’s Office continues to attempt to identify the driver. The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the manhunt also.
No injuries were reported and there was only minor damage to the vehicles involved.

Law enforcement in three counties search for man who fled when deputies tried to serve warrants

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Law enforcement agencies are still searching this afternoon for a fugitive wanted in Lumpkin, Dawson and Baldwin counties.
White County Sheriff Neal Walden said when his deputies attempted to serve felony and misdemeanor warrants on Jeremiah Wayne Wendt, 39, at his residence on Wauka Mountain Road this morning, an unidentified woman answered the door while he jumped through a window at the back of the residence and escaped.
Wauka Mountain Road is near the Hall County line and deputies believe he fled into that county. A Georgia State Patrol helicopter also joined the search but as of 5 p.m. Wendt had not apprehended.

Alto man charged with DUI, hit-and-run in Helen

HELEN, Ga. – An Alto man has been arrested following a hit and run accident Saturday that injured a Helen pedestrian.
Christopher Allen Hatter, 41, faces multiple charges after he allegedly struck James Forrest Stephens, 45, of Helen on Hwy. 75 near the intersection of Hamby Street. Stephens was transported by White County EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with undisclosed injuries.
Graylon Bryson, of Helen, told Georgia State Patrol he witnessed the incident. Bryson said he was traveling northbound behind Hatter’s 2002 Mitsubishi Galant and that Hatter was having difficulty maintaining his lane. He added that Hatter had crossed into the southbound lane then swerved back to the right, crossing onto the shoulder and struck Stephens.
Bryson said Hatter continued north for a short distance then made a u-turn and began to travel south to the site of the accident, slowed down and almost stopped before accelerating and continuing south on Hwy. 75, leaving the scene.
Hatter was arrested and booked into the White County Detention Center where he is charged with DUI, hit and run resulting in serious injury or death, failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to maintain lane and no proof of insurance.

UPDATE: Fatal three-car crash on Hwy. 115

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – The Georgia State Patrol has provided additional details on that Monday crash that claimed the life of 51-year-old Margie Milum of Dahlonega.
Also injured in the accident on Hwy. 115 was 43-year-old Lawanda Thurmond of Mount Airy and her passenger one-year-old Elliott Crowe of Clarkesville. Both were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with undisclosed injuries.
According to the accident report provided by the Georgia State Patrol at approximately 1:30 p.m., Milum was driving west on SR 115 in the right lane. Josias Bautista Maneiro was also traveling west on SR 115 in the left lane. The Thurmond vehicle was traveling east on SR 115.
The Milum vehicle reportedly traveled off the roadway to the right then over corrected, crossed the center line and struck Maneiro vehicle. Following that impact, the Milum vehicle rotated clockwise in the eastbound lane and was struck by the Thurmond vehicle on the driver’s side door.

Cleveland woman injured in collision on Hwy. 11

CLEVELAND, Ga. — A Cleveland woman was injured in a three-car crash Tuesday afternoon on State Road in White County.
According to a preliminary report by the Georgia State Patrol, 62-year-old Jennifer Los was slowing her Volvo S40 as she approached a 2013 Ford Focus which had stopped when her vehicle was struck from behind by a Dodge Dynasty driven by 87-year-old Theodore Lorenzen of Clermont.
The Los vehicle was forced into the rear bumper of the Ford Focus, driven by Alexis Robinson,19, of Lula.
For an unknown reason, after the first collision, the Dynasty began traveling forward again, striking the Volvo a second time and causing it to strike the Ford again.
Los was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with undisclosed injuries. No one else was injured.
Lorenzen was cited for traveling too closely.

Shooting at Dalton High School

DALTON, Ga. – The Dalton Police Department is on scene at Dalton High School where shots have been fired.
Dalton Police report that no student was injured by the shooting and all students are out of harm’s way. They also report the subject, a teacher, has been taken into custody.
The subject had barricaded themselves into a classroom earlier today before firing a weapon. Local police and Georgia State Patrol responded to the initial call. Concerning those reports that have come about a student injured during the evacuation, the Dalton Police were adamant that no student was injured by the shooting.
Police are also asking parents to NOT go to Dalton High School as they say, “The area inside the school has been evacuated and there are no students believed to be in the school at this time.”
The evacuated students have been taken to the Northwest Georgia Trade Center where police report parents should go for their children.
Murrayville man killed in collision on Hwy. 115

CLEVELAND, Ga. – A Murrayville man was killed Saturday when his Toyota Scion crossed the double yellow line on Ga. 115 and struck a Ford F-150 head on just east of Cleveland.
The Georgia State Patrol has identified the man killed as 30-year-old Ulises Delgado-Carrera. The driver of the Ford F-150 was Tony Hooper, 49, of Cleveland. He was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to Cpl. Spencer Munger, of GSP Post 6 in Gainesville, at approximately 6:52 a.m., Carerra was traveling west on Ga. 115 when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle crossed the double-yellow line and struck Hooper’s pickup truck.
Two other vehicles were involved in the accident. A Ford Escape driven by Jeremy Craig, 37, of Cleveland, could not avoid the initial collision and struck the Toyota Scion and a westbound Kia Soul driven by Erica Mokarem, 45, of Demorest, was struck by debris from the collision. Neither Craig nor Mokarem was injured.
The wreck shut down Ga. 115 for several hours.

Suwanee Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident

WHITE COUNTY Ga. – Georgia State Patrol Post 6 of Gainesville reports a 61-year-old Suwanee man was killed in a motorcycle accident Saturday evening on Ga. Hwy 75 north of Cleveland.
GSP Public Information Officer Tracey Watson said the incident report indicates that Alain Eboli was riding his 2002 Harley Davidson southbound on Ga. Hwy. 75 near mile marker 6 and negotiating a right curve when he entered the opposite lane of travel and lost control of his motorcycle.
The motorcycle then overturned and continued traveling south. It traveled off the left shoulder while on its side and down a steep embankment. The victim was transported to the White County Coroner.
Eboli was thrown off the vehicle which then came to a rest in a field.

Cleveland Woman Faces Felony Charges After Wreck That Injured Her and Son

CLEVELAND, Ga. – A Cleveland woman faces felony charges today after a single-vehicle accident on Helen Highway injured her and sent her 6-year-old son to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in critical condition Sunday.
According to Corporal Spencer Munger of the Georgia Highway Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville, Elizabeth Tooley, 35, of Cleveland failed to maintain the lane on Ga. Hwy. 75 near Pine Hill Drive and traveled off the right shoulder of the roadway in her 2015 Ford Focus. She over corrected, then reentered the roadway and traveled into the northbound lanes, striking a curb. Her vehicle then traveled down an embankment approximately 239 feet and struck a tree head-on.
Tooley was not restrained. She suffered what was reported to be non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Tooley’s son who was in the rear seat on the passenger side and was improperly restrained and not in a child restraint of any kind, was airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Tooley faces charges of DUI, DUI child endangerment, and serious injury by motor vehicle, a felony.
