Georgia DOT Continues Cable Rail Repair along I-575 in Canton, GA
CANTON Ga. – A Georgia DOT Maintenance crew resumes today its work on repairing the cable rail along Interstate 575 in Cherokee County. Work will proceed daily between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.
It is Georgia DOT position that guardrail and cable rail maintenance and repair are essential to keeping our roadways safe for the traveling public. Our maintenance workers do their best to keep track of the damage to guard/cable rails and make repairs as quickly as possible in order to preserve road safety.
Each day, hundreds of Georgia Department of Transportation employees and contractors work on dozens of highway, bridge and intersection improvements throughout the state. Their work often brings them and heavy machinery in close proximity to travel lanes. Fifty-seven Georgia DOT personnel and many more motorists, passengers and contractors’ workers have been killed in highway work zone accidents since 1973. Commission Could Approve $570,000 Pedestrian Bridge Tuesday

HELEN, Ga. — The Helen City Commission is expected to approve a resolution authorizing the Georgia Department of Transportation and the City to ratify a contract for funding a pedestrian bridge on Main Street near Paul’s Steakhouse.
The joint agreement has a price tag of around $570,000. The state will be responsible for $300,000 and city taxpayers will fund the remainder.
The city is also receiving bids from contractors for the Escowee Street Sidewalk Project. City Manager Jerry Elkins said only one bid had been received as of late Monday afternoon but he expected to receive at least two more before tomorrow’s meeting.
Commission is also expected to appoint three members to the Planning, Design and Review Board, consider providing the United Way of White County a letter of approval to obtain a special event, non-profit license from the Georgia Department of Revenue for the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on premises in conjunction with a celebrity golf tournament dinner to be held in the Holiday Inn Express Conference Center on April 17.
Helen Pedestrian Bridge Approved Again

HELEN, Ga. – A contract for the construction of the long-awaited — and now more expensive — pedestrian bridge over the Chattahoochee River along Main Street was awarded to Square Deal Enterprises again at Tuesday’s Helen City Council meeting.
Council originally approved the contract in June for $586,022 but was forced to rebid the project because it will be funded, in part, by federal Transportation Enhancement dollars through the Georgia Department of Transportation. The original bid did not include a provision requiring a portion of the work to be completed by minority or woman-owned business.
The bid approved Tuesday was for $623,022.
The bridge will connect the sidewalks that front The Castle Inn and Café International and is identical to the bridge that exists in front of Paul’s Steakhouse on the opposite side of Main Street.
Four companies submitted bids in June but only one met the federal requirement and it was $270,000 higher than Square Deal’s bid. The council then had to choose between accepting the higher bid or rebidding the project. They chose the latter.
The bid now goes to GDOT for final approval.
City Manager Jerry Elkins was approved to serve on the Northeast Georgia Housing Authority.
Council also approved the addition on another entrance/exit for the city fire department and the second reading of an ordinance to amend Chapter 6 of the city’s municipal code as it relates to alcoholic beverages.

Opening of New Lane on Ga. 400 Delayed

CUMMING — Commuters from Atlanta to Dawson, White and Lumpkin counties will have to wait a little longer for the third northbound lane of Ga. 400 to open. Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) officials, who expected to have the new lane between McFarland Parkway (Exit 12) and Peachtree Parkway (Exit 13) finished by September, now say it will be October.
The good news is that they also expect to have the stretch between Peachtree Parkway and Bald Ridge Marina Road completed in October. Originally that portion of Ga. 400 was not expected to open until March.
Funding from the $47 million Georgia transportation SPLOST will pay for an additional lane on both sides of Ga. 400 from McFarland Parkway all the way to Browns Bridge Road.
One Lane of Ga. 400 Closed This Weekend

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — It may seem a little like rush hour traffic to anyone planning to use Ga. 400 to commute into Atlanta this weekend. Georgia Department of Transportation has closed one northbound lane between McFarland Parkway/Exit 12 and Peachtree Parkway/Exit 13.
The lane was closed at 9 p.m Friday and will remain closed until noon on Monday while contractors work on widening the busy highway. GDOT officials ask that drivers reduce speeds while in the work zone as workers and heavy equipment will be near the road.
The highway is currently being widened on each side, and the northbound lane to Exit 13 is expected to open by September.
GDOT Abruptly Closes Ga. 75 in Helen

HELEN — The Georgia Department of Transportation abruptly closed Ga. 75 in Helen from Hamby Street north to Ga. 356 in Robertstown yesterday from 8 p.m. until this morning around 3 a.m. due to damage to the roads caused by washout from natural springs in the area.
Public Works Director Ross Hewell said the highway will be closed again from 5 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Thursday so GDOT can repair the road.
“They will be doing some repatching and repaving,” Hewell said. “We apologize for the inconvenience, but GDOT didn’t give us much notice that they were going to do this.”
