Cleveland, GA – Truett McConnell University, a private Baptist institution in North Georgia, has removed its longtime president Emir Caner following the results of an independent investigation into whether he ignored sexual abuse allegations on campus.
The Board of Trustees announced the leadership change late last week, citing a need for “integrity, accountability, and transparency” as the university works to restore trust among students, faculty, and the Southern Baptist community.
Caner, who became TMU’s president in 2008, has been credited with expanding enrollment and strengthening ties with Georgia Baptists. However, the probe, initiated earlier this year, examined whether he failed to properly respond to reports of misconduct brought forward by students.
While the details of the allegations have not been publicly released, the board confirmed that the findings were serious enough to warrant immediate action. “The safety of our students is our highest priority,” trustees said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring that all reports of abuse are taken seriously and handled with the utmost care.”
Dr. John Yarbrough, a veteran pastor and professor at TMU, has been named interim president. Yarbrough previously served as vice president of evangelism at the North American Mission Board and is expected to provide stability during the transition.
The move comes at a sensitive time for both the university and the wider Southern Baptist Convention, which has faced mounting criticism in recent years over how its leaders have handled sexual abuse claims. Advocates for survivors say the removal of Caner marks a step toward accountability but warn that systemic change is still needed.
Students on campus expressed mixed emotions. Some praised the decision, saying it shows the school is taking the matter seriously, while others worried about how the shake-up might affect enrollment and morale.
Truett McConnell University, founded in 1946, enrolls around 3,000 students and is considered a cornerstone of higher education in North Georgia. University officials have pledged to implement new safeguards and reporting mechanisms to ensure students feel safe and supported moving forward.
