Cleveland man charged with murder in Friday shooting

CLEVELAND — A shooting east of Cleveland Friday evening has left one man dead and another charged with felony murder.

Captain Clay Hammond of the White County Sheriff’s Office reported in an email that Gary Stephens, 27 of Cleveland is charged with aggravated assault and felony murder in the shooting death of Scott Backhaus, 41, of Cleveland.

Deputies were called to a shooting at 633 Holiness Campground Road in the eastern part of the county around 10 p.m. Friday. When deputies arrived, they found Backhaus deceased at the scene.
