Rabies Alert Posted in White County

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Sean Sullivan, White County Environmental Health Manager,  reported another case of rabies in White County last week.

In a news release, Sullivan said that two dogs had contact recently with a rabid raccoon in the Danny Palmer Road area.

Sullivan said some children heard a ruckus and told their parents. What they found was two dogs playing tug of war with a raccoon. The homeowner separated the dogs from the raccoon and then shot the raccoon.

The raccoon was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab Virology Section in Decatur.  White County Environmental Health was advised that the raccoon tested positive for rabies.

This is the fifth confirmed case of rabies in White County this year.

Positive alert signs have been posted in the area where the rabid raccoon was located.  If you live in this area and have concerns of rabid animal exposure, contact White County Environmental Health at 706-348-7698 during normal business hours.

Sullivan said, both the dogs are current on their rabies vaccinations and will go through a required 45-day quarantine.

Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their domesticated pets for rabies.
