Cleveland man arrested for battery, family violence

CLEVELAND, Ga. — Cory Andrew Echols, 27 of Cleveland was arrested Monday after he admitted shooting his girlfriend Karalee Anne Fox several times at close range with an airsoft gun following a domestic argument.

White County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a welfare check at 536 Partin Road after Fox’s son reported that his mother had been shot several times with a BB gun by her boyfriend.

According to the arrest report, Fox told deputies she had been working and got home early. She stated her boyfriend was drunk and they got into an argument. He became angry and shot her in the arm and lower back, leaving visible marks.

The deputies took pictures of her injuries, arrested Echols and transported him to White County Detention Center where he is charged with battery, family violence.

Mark David Ayers charged with aggravated assault

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Mark Taylor Ayers, 32 of Cleveland, has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly head butted his girlfriend twice during a domestic altercation, knocking her unconscious and breaking her nose early Sunday morning.

Heather Griffies told Deputy Adam Ramey that she and Ayers had been to Helen the night before and both had been drinking. When the returned home, Griffies said they got into an argument and he got into her face and began screaming at her and pushing her. When she pushed back, Ayers reportedly head butted her, knocking her unconscious. When she regained consciousness, she said he continued to scream at her and head butted her again.

According to the arrest report she went to the sink bleeding severely and he handed her some paper towels to stop the bleeding and told her she needed stitches and to go to the hospital. Then he left the residence.

Griffies said her neighbors took her to the hospital where x-rays confirmed she had a fractured nose.

She went to the White County Sheriff’s Office that day to report the incident.

When deputies spoke to Ayers, he said they had argued, but he did not remember striking her.

He was arrested and transported to the White County Detention Center.

BOC meets twice Thursday to consider 2019 millage rate

CLEVELAND, Ga. – The White County Board of Commissioners will hold split sessions Thursday (July 18) with a public hearing on the 2019 millage rate at 8 a.m., followed by a called meeting at 6 p.m.

The millage rate is scheduled to be adopted on Aug. 5.

Other items to be considered during tomorrow’s morning session include:

  • Approval of contracts for inmate housing at White County Detention Center;
  • Approval of request for proposal (RFP) process for stand-by debris management;
  • Authorization of the application for FEMA/SAFR grant;
  • Approval of a contract for provision of fiber-optic internet service for Yonah Preserve with Habersham Trail Wave;
  • Appointment to the Region 1 Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Planning Board.

The 6 p.m. called meeting is primarily for the purpose of holding a second public hearing on the 2019 millage rate.

Williams charged with battery, cruelty to children

CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County authorities have charged Joesph Patrick Williams, 27 of Cleveland, with battery, one count of cruelty to children in the first degree and three counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.

Deputies with White County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residence on White Street on May 27 by Williams wife, Brittany Lynn, who said her husband struck their 3-year-old son in the face, neck and back repeatedly to punish him.

The deputies located the husband sitting on a porch across the street from his residence. Williams admitted he had been drinking and tried to strike his son on the rear end but missed and struck him in the face and neck.

Williams was arrested and transported to White County Detention Center.

Authorities also reported the incident to the Department of Human Resources.

Cleveland man charged with violation of family violence order, obstruction of officer

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Deputies from the White County Sheriff’s Office arrested William Arthur Russell, 54, of Cleveland last week on a charge of violation of a family violence court order and willful obstruction of officers.

According to the incident report, Deputy Jason Abercrombie responded to a 911 call from Russell’s wife Patty Russell on May 14 at 4:52 a.m. who said her husband was at the home in violation of bond conditions that flowed from his arrest on a simple assault charge the previous month.

Russell said her husband was intoxicated and was being physically and mentally abusive to her.

William Russell told the deputy he did not have any bond conditions but dispatch confirmed that a court ordered him to stay away from the home. When the handcuffs were placed on him, Russell headbutted Abercrombie, knocking him to the floor. A struggle ensued and the deputy was able regain control of the situation.

Additional deputies arrived on the scene and helped place Russell in a patrol car and transport him to White County Detention Center where he was held without bond.

Cleveland man charged with child molestation, sexual battery

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Investigators with the White County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jason Smidt, 48, of Cleveland Oct. 9 and charged him with sexual battery and child molestation.

Captain Rick Kelley said the arrest followed a report of inappropriate contact between Smidt and a juvenile.

Smidt was released from the White County Detention Center on Oct. 11 on $15,000 bond.

Kelley declined to release any further information as the investigation is ongoing.

Cleveland Police Arrest Two on Drug Charges

Lisa Wertz arrested by Cleveland Police.

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Cleveland Police Chief John Foster announced in a press release that deputies arrested 44-year-old Lisa Wertz and 29-year-old Ruben Derrick Hoffman at a residence at 435 Pine Circle in Cleveland Monday on multiple drug charges.

Foster said the two are suspected of selling between two and three ounces of meth a week from that location.

Wertz is charged with distribution of meth, possession of meth, possession of drug related objects and cruelty to children in the first degree. She is being held at the White County Detention Center. Hoffman is charged with  distribution of meth, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug related objects, and cruelty to children first degree.

Hoffman is being held at the Habersham County Detention Center on unrelated charges.

Foster said the investigation is ongoing.

Sautee Nacoochee Man Charged with Family Violence

Richard Sosebee charged with battery, cruelty to children.

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Deputies with the White County Sheriff’s Office arrested Richard Samuel Sosebee, 44, of Sautee Nacoochee, Friday following an altercation at his parents’ home on Skylake Road. He is charged with battery, cruelty to children and criminal trespass.

According to the incident report, Sosebee was intoxicated when he came to the residence and asked if he could spend the night. He became angry with his father James Sosebee, 66, kicked in the back door of the residence, grabbed him and started fighting. Richard Sosebee’s mother Carolyn Sosebee and his 15-year-old daughter witnessed the incident and called 9-1-1.

The report further states Richard Sosebee broke furniture inside the home and punched holes in the wall. James Sosebee suffered cuts over his eye and cheek.

Richard Sosebee was transported to the White County Detention Center where his bond was set at $4,500.

White Co. Couple Charged With Cruelty to Children

CLEVELAND, Ga. – A White County Sheriff’s Office investigation that started as a missing children report led to the arrest of Dallas and Heather Brown of 233 Whiskey Still Drive in Cleveland on charges of cruelty to children last month.

According to the incident report, Deputy Charles Davis responded to a call at the Brown residence where Heather Brown informed him that her sons, ages 13 and 14, had been missing since noon the previous day. Davis filed a BOLO and returned to the Sheriff’s Office to file a report. Before the report had been completed, Sgt.  A. Sims told Davis to return to the scene and that he would seek an arrest warrant for Heather Brown on a charge of cruelty to children.

The boys were located standing on the corner of Whiskey Still Drive and Tail Race Lane.

According to the report when deputies asked them where they had been, they said their father, Dallas Brown, told them to leave and never come back. They added that they were not allowed in the house but forced to sleep in a metal shed with no electricity, no running water and a rotten floor. The boys said the only food they had was what was served at school and they were forced to go to the bathroom in the woods near the house.

According to the report, the boys also stated that once they slipped into the home through an open window to obtain food but were caught by their father and a padlock was placed on the refrigerator.

Department of Family and Children Services was called to take custody of the children and deputies were informed that DFCS had been called to the home on a similar situation about three years ago.

Dallas Brown was arrested and transported to White County Detention Center.

Drug Task Force Seizes 3 Marijuana Crops

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Deputies with the White County Sheriff’s Office and Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO) assisted the Governor’s Task Force/Drug Suppression unit Tuesday in conducting an operation that located three separate marijuana crops and confiscated marijuana with a total street value of $18,000.

 

 

The Governor’s Task Force has a primary responsibility to eradicate domestic marijuana within the state of Georgia and gather intelligence relating to its manufacture and cultivation.

White County authorities executed a search warrant at Lamar Yawn’s residence at 728 White Oak Trial in Cleveland and found five marijuana plants along with less than an ounce of marijuana inside the residence.

Yawn was charged with manufacturing marijuana and agreed to turn himself in at the White County Detention Center today.

A search warrant was executed at Christopher Richards’ residence at 100 Rattlesnake Hill in Cleveland which produced six marijuana plants, 1.5 lbs. of cultivated marijuana, a handgun and $12,000 cash.

Richards was arrested for manufacturing marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. He was transported to the White County Detention Center.

White County authorities also seized five marijuana plants found in the wood line on Town Creek Road and continue to investigate this marijuana grow to determine who is responsible.

White County Man Charged With Battery and Cruelty to Children

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Troy Lee Knight, 35, of Cleveland was arrested Friday and placed in the White County Detention Center charged simple battery, cruelty to children and criminal trespass following a domestic altercation at 3058 Lothridge Road.

Betty Knight told deputies her husband was addicted to methamphetamine and, following a verbal argument, he slapped her in the face, grabbed her by the neck and told her he “was going to kill her.”

She said when she attempted to get away, he grabbed her by the hair and pushed her head into the headlight of his truck several times. According to the police report, a neighbor heard her scream and called 9-1-1. Betty Knight said her husband then fled in his truck.

Because he was not on the scene when deputies arrived, warrants were taken out on him and he was stopped two days later in Lumpkin County where he was held for White County.

The incident was partially witnessed by the couple’s fifteen (15) year old son who told deputies he heard his parents arguing inside the house. Then, he saw them come outside and start screaming at each other but didn’t see anything physical between the two.

Homeless Man Charged With Assault, Battery

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Michael Anthony Jones, 34, of Portland, Maine, has been charged with aggravated assault by strangulation and simple battery, following an altercation at 376 Brianwood Drive in Cleveland last week.

According to the police report, Stephen Campbell told White County deputies he and Jones were involved in a verbal argument and that Jones began to strike him in the face and grabbed him around the throat. He said they fell to the floor and Jones continued to strike him in the face. He said his wife, Sherry, got a handgun and fired a shot into the floor in an effort to get him off her husband.

Jones told police that he was homeless and that the couple had allowed him to stay at their home for the past week. When the two men began fighting in the kitchen, Jones said Sherry struck him in the head with a stick and Stephen Campbell then pulled a knife on him. Campbell’s wife said she did not strike Jones and only fired the gun to try and get him off her husband.

Deputies observed a laceration on his Jones’ head and he was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Campbell did not require transport.

When the hospital notified White County authorities that Jones was ready for discharge, he was handcuffed and transported to White County Detention Center.

Deputies reported that while Jones was being taken to the detention center he threatened to kill Campbell when he was released. The threat was audio and video recorded.

White County Man Is Charged With Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon

CLEVELAND, Ga. – White County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Jeffrey Kidd, 50, of 4732 Town Creek Road last week and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a domestic dispute with his wife Frances Kidd, 54.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the observed Ms. Kidd trying to leave the scene. According to the arrest report when they stopped here they noticed blood on her head, clothes, hands, legs and feet. They radioed for EMS then entered the residence and found Mr. Kidd laying in the bed hiding under covers.

He stated that he was sitting in his recliner drinking beer and she grabbed the other beers and poured them out. He also said she became violent because she had been drinking and tried to hit him in the head with a wine bottle.  But when asked where all the blood came from, he told deputies she did that to herself.

One of the deputies observed blood on the recliner, the floor and on a wine bottle that also had hair fibers.

Ms. Kidd stated the argument became heated after she began pouring the beer out and that he hit her on top of the head with something but she didn’t know if it was his fist or a bottle. She declined medical treatment.

Mr. Kidd was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and transported to the White County Detention Center.

Cleveland Couple Charged With ID Fraud, Theft

CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested 24-year-old Jon R. Marshall and Carrie Tumlin, 19, and charged them with several counts of theft by taking, forgery and identity theft fraud in connection with an incident at 20 Kelley Road in Cleveland.

According to the arrest report, Tumlin’s grandmother, Nancy Green, said the couple had been staying at her home on Kelly Road since the end of September and allegedly stole cash, checkbooks, jewelry, syringes, a morphine drip and an assortment of power tools from her home.

The couple was arrested and transported to White County Detention Center in Cleveland.

Bond was set at $12,000 for Marshall and $7,000 for Tumlin.
