Lera labored as a textile worker for several years, but decided she wanted to be at home. It was at that time she became a poultry farmer, earning top grower with Gold Kist on several occasions. She often referred to her job as “raising chickens” and was good at not only raising chickens, but also cooking them.

Lera was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and daughter-in-law. She took great care of her mother, husband and mother-in-law in her home until their passing. Her family was her whole world! However, her passion was her Savior! Lera loved to study the Bible. It was that love for God and His Word that inspired her and Guy to open their home to intimately teach new converts the basic principles of the Bible. Lera’s loving ability to host was also witnessed by those students when she would serve them pound cake, hot from the oven. Lera has encouraged many youth, through the years, to grow in grace and the knowledge of God’s Word.   She was a member of the Bethel Temple Congregational Holiness Church where she also served several years as the Ladies’ Bible Class Teacher.   Her influence will live on in the lives of those she has taught.

Lera is preceded in death by her husband, Guy Black; son, Danny Black; sister, Frances Dickerson; brothers, Barney Hooper, Fred Hooper and Paul Hooper.
